Henry II was a king who, though bestowed with numerous positions of power, dedicated himself to spreading Christianity, restoring churches, and establishing monasteries. Until the end of his life, he preserved the virtues worthy of a great saint. Together with his wife, Cunegunda, he founded the Diocese of Bamberg. When the saint died in 1024, he was buried in the cathedral there. Fifteen years later, his devoted wife was also buried beside him.
Saint Henry was the Duke of Bavaria, the King of Germany, and the Holy Roman Emperor. Yet he was not satisfied with these temporary positions of authority; instead, through prayer and devotion to the eternal King, he sought the crown of everlasting life. As an emperor, he worked tirelessly and enthusiastically for the spread of Christianity. He restored many great churches that had been destroyed by non-believers, provided them with financial support and necessary land, and established monasteries and other religious institutions. He also increased the income of existing institutions. Saint Henry built the diocesan administrative center of Bamberg with his own family wealth.
The saint was deeply obedient to the Pope. When Pope Benedict VIII, who had crowned Henry as emperor, sought refuge with him, Henry protected the Pope and restored his ecclesiastical authority. At Monte Cassino monastery, when Saint Henry was afflicted with a serious skin disease, he was miraculously healed by Saint Benedict. To protect the Catholic Church, the saint was even willing to go to war against the Greeks. As a result, he conquered Apulia. He had a habit of praying before doing anything.
It is said that on many occasions, the saint saw the Lord’s angels, martyrs, and his intercessors fighting at the front of his army on his behalf. Through such divine assistance, Saint Henry conquered the lands of non-believers not with weapons, but through prayer. Hungary, at that time, was also a pagan country. However, when Henry married his sister to Stephen, the king of Hungary, Stephen received baptism, and the entire nation came into the Christian faith. Though married, there was no stain on Henry’s holiness. After the saint’s death, his wife, Saint Cunegunda—who had remained a virgin—retired to her own home.
Everything the saint did for the benefit and glory of his empire was carried out with great vision and foresight. In regions such as Gaul, Italy, and Germany, he left behind clear signs of his generosity toward Christianity. The fragrance of his noble deeds spread far and wide, and he became known more for his holiness than for his royal titles. At last, as a reward for all his virtuous works, God called the saint back to grant him the gift of the heavenly kingdom. Saint Henry passed away in 1024.
He was buried in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in Bamberg. God glorified His servant Henry through many miracles. Numerous miraculous events occurred at his tomb. All of these miracles were later investigated and verified. It was Pope Eugene III who added the name of Henry II to the canon of saints.
