Saint Benedict was born in 480 in Nursia, in the region of Umbria. He was sent to Rome for his education. However, not long after, due to the evils he witnessed in the city, he left Rome in 500 and went to Enfide, about 30 miles away. He desired to live as a monk. So he withdrew to a cave in the Subiaco mountain range, where he lived an isolated life for three years with the help of a monk named Romanus.
Although Benedict preferred a solitary life, his holiness and ascetic practices soon became widely known. A group of monks from Vicovaro invited him to become the head of their monastery. Saint Benedict accepted their invitation. However, his strict monastic rules were not well received by them. As a result, they attempted to poison him to get rid of him. Therefore, Saint Benedict left them and returned to Subiaco.
Soon after, many people were drawn to Saint Benedict and accepted him as their spiritual teacher. He organized them into twelve monasteries, each under the leadership of a superior he appointed. Manual labor was also part of their monastic lifestyle.
Subiaco soon became a center of spirituality and learning. However, a neighboring priest named Florentius began to obstruct Benedict’s activities. Because of this, around 525, Benedict left Subiaco and settled in Monte Cassino. There, he destroyed a pagan temple of the god Apollo and brought many people from the surrounding areas to the Christian faith.
In 530, Saint Benedict began building the now-famous Monte Cassino Monastery, which later became the birthplace of the Western monastic tradition. As Benedict’s holiness, wisdom, and miraculous deeds became well known, many people flocked to him to become his disciples. He organized all of them into a monastic community and wrote his renowned Rule, which included guidelines for prayer, study, work, and communal life. This Rule emphasized obedience, stability, and zeal.
Holy deeds and devotion were the focal points of his Rule. These principles were so influential that they went on to deeply impact Western monasticism for centuries to come.
Even while leading his monastic community, Saint Benedict remained involved in advising rulers and popes, assisting the poor and the destitute, and worked to alleviate the sufferings caused by the Lombard invasion under Totila.
Saint Benedict died on March 21 at Monte Cassino.
