The information about these saints has been obtained from several ancient manuscript copies regarding the deeds of Antoninus Pius. These seven brothers were the sons of a Christian widow named Felicitas, who was a devout and noble woman from Rome. She raised her children in exceptional virtue. After the death of her husband, she lived a life akin to that of a nun, devoting herself to God. She spent all her time in prayer, fasting, and acts of charity. Through the example set by Felicitas and her family, many idol-worshippers abandoned their false gods and embraced the Christian faith.

This provoked the opposition of pagan priests. Felicitas publicly expressed her Christian faith in her life. The priests complained to Emperor Antoninus, saying that she had led many people away from the worship of the gods, whom they believed were the protectors of the empire, and caused them to embrace Christianity, thus angering their gods. They added that to appease the wrath of these gods, Felicitas and her sons should be sacrificed to them.

Antoninus, being a superstitious man, immediately ordered Publius, the governor of Rome, to investigate the priests’ complaints and take the necessary steps to appease the gods. Publius, without delay, ordered that Felicitas and her sons be arrested and brought before him. When they were presented before him, he separated Felicitas and tried to persuade her and her sons to offer sacrifices to their gods in order to avoid brutal torture. But the saint boldly replied:
“Do not think you can frighten me with threats or entice me with kind words. The Holy Spirit within me will not allow Satan to conquer me. He will grant me victory over your attacks.”

Angered by her reply, Publius said:
“Oh unhappy woman, are you so cruel that you desire death not only for yourself but also for your sons? Are you inciting them to destruction through painful tortures?”
She replied:
“If my children are faithful to Christ, they will live with Him forever; but if they worship idols, they must expect eternal death.”

The next day, the governor took Felicitas to the temple of Mars and said:
“Felicitas, show some compassion for your sons. They are entering the prime of youth and likely desire to become great men in the future.”
Hearing this, the mother replied:
“Your mercy is, in truth, impiety. The compassion you show may make me the cruelest of mothers.”
Turning to her sons, she said:
“My sons, look to heaven, where Jesus and His saints await you. Be faithful in His love and courageously fight for your souls.”

Enraged by these words, Publius said:
“You are a rebel, openly advising against the emperor’s command in my presence!”
And he ordered her to be brutally struck.

After that, he summoned each of her sons one by one, trying to seduce, persuade, and threaten them to sacrifice to the gods. The eldest, Januarius, was the first to face this mockery. With firm resolve, he said:
“You are advising me to do something utterly foolish and irrational. I believe that my Lord Jesus will protect me from such faithlessness.”
Publius ordered that he be stripped and beaten with rods. Afterward, he was sent back to prison.

Next, the second son, Felix, was brought forth. When asked to offer sacrifices to the gods, he replied:
“There is only one God. We offer sacrifices to Him from our hearts. We will never forget the love we owe to Jesus. Use all your tactics, try every cruelty you know; you will never be able to overcome our faith.”

Each of the remaining brothers gave unique responses. They did not fear the death they had to endure, but they did fear the everlasting torments of hell. Thus, they despised the threats of men.

Finally, the youngest, Martialis, said:
“Whoever does not acknowledge that Jesus is the true God will surely be thrown into eternal flames.”
Hearing this, the furious judge ordered all the brothers to be beaten with rods and then imprisoned again. With all his efforts having failed, the despairing governor reported everything to the emperor.

Upon learning the details of the examination, Antoninus ordered that the brothers be sent to various judges and condemned to death. Januarius was the first to die, beaten with rods embedded with lead.

The next two, Felix and Philip, were flogged to death. The fourth, Silvanus, was thrown headfirst into a pit. The last three—Alexander, Vitalis, and Martialis—were beheaded.

Four months later, the same sentence was pronounced upon their mother, Felicitas.

In the Roman martyrology, the feast of Saint Felicitas is commemorated on November 23, and the feast of her seven sons is commemorated on July 10. In the old Roman calendar published by Bucherius, the feast day for these saints was also marked as July 10.

It was in the church built over Saint Felicitas’s tomb on the Salarian Way that the great Saint Gregory delivered his third homily on the Gospel. In that homily, the saint said:
“This saint had seven sons, like many other mothers. How fearful she must have been to lose them and leave this earth alone. But she is more than a martyr. She saw her seven sons killed before her very eyes. In one sense, she was a martyr for each of them. She was the eighth in the line of martyrs, but in suffering, she was there from beginning to end. Her martyrdom began with the execution of her eldest and ended with her own death. The crown she received was not for her alone but also for her sons.”

Even though she witnessed her children’s torture, she was not shaken. She bore their pain as her own and endured it with the hope she had for them, which filled her heart with joy. Her faith triumphed over flesh and blood; death and torment could not shake her powerful spirit. We lament when God takes back the children He has given us. But Saint Felicitas said that she would grieve only if her children did not die for Jesus. When they died for Him, she rejoiced.

It is our bad example that causes the problems our children create, and we are distressed daily by them. Our children should take this saint as their model.
