July 07:

Saint Pantænus, a scholar and missionary, lived during the second century. By birth, he was a native of Sicily. The purity and appeal of Christian speech attracted him deeply and inspired him to open his eyes to the truth. As a result, Pantænus began studying the Holy Scriptures, and his unquenchable thirst for knowledge of them led him to Alexandria, Egypt.

There, the disciples of Saint Mark had established a Christian school to teach the faith. Through his profound knowledge of the Scriptures, Pantænus was drawn out of the darkness and into the light. Before long, he was appointed as the head of this Christian school.

Due to Pantænus’s deep learning and the unique nature of his teaching style, the fame of the institution surpassed that of many other philosophical schools of the time. The lessons taught by the saint had the power to illuminate minds and bring wisdom to those who heard them.

During this time, some Indians who had come to Alexandria for trade invited the saint to visit their homeland. Accepting this invitation, Pantænus left his school and traveled to the East to proclaim the Gospel. He discovered that the seeds of faith had already sprouted in those regions.

After continuing his private teaching until the year 216, Saint Pantænus’s noble life came to a close with his peaceful death.
