1890-ല്‍ ഇറ്റലിയിലെ കൊറിനാള്‍ഡിയിലെ ഒരു ദരിദ്ര കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് വിശുദ്ധ മരിയ ഗൊരേറ്റി ജനിച്ചത്‌. നെറ്റൂണോക്ക് സമീപം തന്റെ മാതാവിനെ വീട്ടുവേലകളില്‍ സഹായിച്ചുകൊണ്ടുള്ള വളരെ ദുരിതപൂര്‍ണ്ണമായൊരു ബാല്യമായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധയുടേത്‌. അതേ സമയം പ്രാര്‍ത്ഥന നിറഞ്ഞ, വളരെ ഭക്തിപൂര്‍വ്വമായൊരു ജീവിതമായിരുന്നു മരിയയുടേത്‌. മരിയയ്ക്ക് 12 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിയാത്തവിധം കഠിനമായ പരീക്ഷയെ നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്ന കാര്യം ഓരോ ക്രൈസ്തവനും സുപരിചിതമാണ്. 1902-ല്‍ തന്റെ വിശുദ്ധിയെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ധീരമായി ചെറുത്തു നിന്ന മരിയയെ അലെസ്സാണ്ട്രോ സെറെനെല്ലിയ എന്നയാള്‍ കുത്തികൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയായിരുന്നു.
‘ഇമിറ്റേഷന്‍ ഓഫ് ക്രൈസ്റ്റ്‌” എന്ന ഐതിഹാസിക കൃതിയില്‍ പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത് ഇങ്ങനെയാണ്, “നിരവധി അഗ്നിപരീക്ഷകളും, നിര്‍ഭാഗ്യങ്ങളും നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നിട്ടും, നിന്റെ മഹത്വം എന്നില്‍ ഉള്ളിടത്തോളം കാലം എനിക്ക് ഭയപ്പെടേണ്ടതായി വന്നിട്ടില്ല. അതാണെന്റെ ശക്തി, ഏതൊരു കഷ്ടതകളെക്കാളും ശക്തമായത്; അതെന്നെ സഹായിക്കുകയും, എന്നെ നയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു” മരണ നേരത്ത് ഈ വാക്കുകള്‍ അവള്‍ തന്റെ രക്ഷകനോടു പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടാവാം. അസാധാരണമായ ധൈര്യത്തോടു കൂടി അവള്‍ തന്നെത്തന്നെ ദൈവത്തിനും അവന്റെ മഹത്വത്തിനുമായി സമര്‍പ്പിക്കുകയും തന്റെ കന്യകാത്വം സംരക്ഷിക്കുവാനായി തന്റെ ജീവന്‍ ബലികഴിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ജാതിമത ഭേദമന്യ ആദരവോടും ബഹുമാനത്തോടും നോക്കുവാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന ഒരു ജീവിതമാണ് അവളുടെ ജീവിതം നല്‍കുന്ന സന്ദേശം. മാതാപിതാക്കള്‍ ദൈവം തങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് നല്‍കിയ കുട്ടികളെ എപ്രകാരം നന്മയിലും, ധൈര്യത്തിലും, വിശുദ്ധിയിലും വളര്‍ത്തുവാന്‍ കഴിയുമെന്ന് മരിയയുടെ ജീവിതത്തില്‍ നിന്ന്‍ പഠിക്കേണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്നു; പരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുമ്പോള്‍ പരാജിതരാകാതേ അവയെ നേരിടുവാന്‍ മരിയ ഗോരെത്തിയുടെ ജീവിതം നമ്മോടു ആഹ്വാനം ചെയ്യുന്നു.
അലസരും, അശ്രദ്ധരുമായ കുട്ടികള്‍ക്കും, യുവാക്കള്‍ക്കും ലൌകിക ജീവിതത്തോടു താല്‍പ്പര്യം തോന്നിയാല്‍, വെറും ക്ഷണികവും, ശൂന്യവും പാപകരവുമായ ലോകത്തിന്റെ ആകര്‍ഷകമായ ആനന്ദങ്ങളില്‍ വഴിതെറ്റി പോകാതിരിക്കുവാന്‍ വേണ്ട മാതൃക, മരിയയുടെ ജീവിതാനുഭവത്തില്‍ നിന്നും ലഭിക്കും. അപ്രകാരം എത്രമാത്രം ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടേറിയതാണെങ്കില്‍ പോലും ക്രിസ്തീയ ധാര്‍മ്മികതയില്‍ തങ്ങളുടെ ദൃഷ്ടി ഉറപ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക്‌ സാധിക്കും. മരിയ ഗോരെത്തിയെ പോലെ ഉറച്ച തീരുമാനവും, ദൈവത്തിന്റെ സഹായവും ഉണ്ടെങ്കില്‍ നമുക്ക്‌ ആ ലക്ഷ്യം നേടുവാന്‍ സാധിക്കും. അതിനാല്‍, കന്യകയും രക്തസാക്ഷിയുമായ വിശുദ്ധ മരിയ ഗോരേത്തി നമുക്ക്‌ കാണിച്ചു തന്ന മാതൃകയനുസരിച്ചുള്ള ജീവിതവിശുദ്ധിക്കായി നമുക്കെല്ലാവര്‍ക്കും പരിശ്രമിക്കാം.
In 1890, Saint Maria Goretti was born into a poor family in Corinaldo, Italy. Her childhood was filled with suffering and hardship, as she helped her mother with household chores near Nettuno. At the same time, Maria led a prayerful and devout life. Every Christian is well aware of the severe trial Maria faced at the tender age of twelve, which she was unable to avoid. In 1902, while bravely resisting to protect her purity, Maria was stabbed to death by a man named Alessandro Serenelli.
In the renowned spiritual classic “The Imitation of Christ,” it is written:
“Though I must endure many fiery trials and misfortunes,
as long as Your majesty is within me, I have no reason to fear.
That is my strength—stronger than any suffering;
it supports and leads me.”
These might well have been the very words Maria offered to her Savior at the hour of death. With extraordinary courage, she offered herself entirely to God and His glory, and sacrificed her life to preserve her virginity.
Her life offers a message that transcends all boundaries of caste and creed, and invites admiration and reverence. From her life, parents must learn how to raise the children God has given them in goodness, courage, and holiness. When faced with trials, Maria Goretti’s life challenges us not to fall, but to face them with steadfastness.
For lazy, careless children and youth, and those drawn to worldly pleasures, her life offers a model to resist the fleeting, empty, and sinful attractions of the world. No matter how difficult it may be, one can keep their gaze fixed on Christian morality. With firm resolve, like Maria, and with God’s help, we too can attain that goal.
Therefore, let us all strive for holiness in our lives, following the model given to us by the virgin and martyr, Saint Maria Goretti.
