Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria was born into a noble family in Cremona, in Lombardy. From an early age, Anthony manifested signs of divine grace in his life. His life filled with goodness, devotion to God, and deep reverence to the Virgin Mother made him a center of special attention among all. Saint Anthony was a man of boundless compassion for the poor. He completed his studies in humanities from his home, then studied philosophy in Pavia and medicine in Padua. In both intelligence and holiness, Anthony easily surpassed his contemporaries.
After receiving a degree in medicine, Anthony returned to Rome. There, he realized that God had chosen him not to heal bodies but to heal souls. Without wasting time, Anthony began the study of Holy Scripture. Even then, he found time to visit the sick and to teach children Christian doctrine.
He also encouraged youth to live in devotion to God and advised the elderly to renew their lives spiritually. During his first celebration of the Holy Mass after priestly ordination, people testified that they saw him standing in a heavenly glow of light amidst angels.
His primary focus was the salvation of souls and the spiritual renewal of the people. With fatherly compassion, he welcomed strangers, the poor, and the suffering, comforting them with the divine Word and helping them with a motherly love. Because of this, his home was referred to as a refuge for the afflicted. People called him “The Angel” and “The Father of their country.”
Feeling that if he had fellow laborers in the Lord’s vineyard, he could do much more for the spread of Christianity, he shared his thoughts with two devout men, Bartholomew Ferrari and James Morigia. Together, they founded the Clerics Regular of St. Paul in Milan. Because of his deep love for Saint Paul the Apostle, who was the Apostle to the Gentiles, people began to call Anthony himself “Saint Paul.”
Pope Clement VII approved the congregation, and Pope Paul III later confirmed it. The congregation quickly expanded into various regions. Saint Anthony was also the founder and spiritual father of the religious community known as the Angelics Sisters. However, he never desired to be the superior of his congregation, such was his humility. He bore the opposition to his congregation with great patience. In guiding those in spiritual life to love God, and priests to follow the life of the Apostles, Saint Anthony never faltered.
He also organized many fraternal associations for married couples. Often, he would conduct processions through the streets and public places, carrying a cross with his fellow clerics. Through his devout prayers and exhortations, even the wicked were led to the path of salvation. It is especially worth mentioning that, out of love for the Crucified Jesus, Saint Anthony used to ring a bell every Friday evening during evening prayer to remind the people of the mystery of the Way of the Cross.
The Holy Name of Jesus was always on his lips. He had a special devotion to the Holy Eucharist. Because of this, he revived the custom among the faithful of daily reception of the Blessed Sacrament.
He is said to have initiated the popular Forty Hours Devotion. Saint Anthony was blessed with many gifts: the gift of prophecy, the ability to understand others’ thoughts, and power over the enemy of the human race.
After a life of constant labor and sacrifice, Saint Anthony fell ill in Guastalla. He was then taken to Cremona, where, lying in the arms of his sorrowful mother and surrounded by his grieving priests, he breathed his last. It is said that he had foretold his mother’s death as well.
At the time of Anthony’s death, he was consoled by a vision of the Apostles, and he also foretold the future growth of his society. Due to the many miracles that occurred through his intercession, people quickly began to venerate him. Pope Leo XIII recognized this devotion, and on the Feast of the Assumption in 1897, Anthony Mary Zaccaria was officially canonized a saint.
