Filled with deep faith, it was Thomas the Apostle, who proclaimed, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28), who propagated the Christian faith in South India as early as the first century AD. Tradition holds that he landed at the port of Muziris (Kodungallur) in AD 52. He brought many people into the Christian faith and established churches. According to the strong tradition of the St. Thomas Christians, he established churches at Kodungallur, Palayoor, Kottakkavu, Kokkamangalam, Niranam near Thiruvalla, Kollam, and Chayal near Nilackal. It is believed that he was martyred at Mylapore, near modern-day Chennai, in AD 72. The Apostle’s tomb in Mylapore has been a renowned pilgrimage site since the first century.
There is substantial historical evidence that long before the birth of Christ, the ancient Roman Empire maintained strong maritime trade relations with South India. Muziris (modern-day Kodungallur) on the Malabar Coast was one of the world’s major ports and trade centers. Aromatic substances were primarily exported to the Greco-Roman world from Muziris. The Roman gold coins unearthed from various sites in South India strongly attest to this trade relationship. In short, it is evident that it would not have been difficult for St. Thomas the Apostle to reach India during the mid-first century AD.
Testimony of the Church Fathers
Both Western and Eastern Church Fathers have attested—directly or indirectly—to the apostolic mission and martyrdom of St. Thomas the Apostle in India. These include Origen (186–255), St. Ephrem (306–373), St. Gregory Nazianzen (329–390), Cyril of Jerusalem (396), St. Ambrose of Milan (333–397), St. John Chrysostom (347–407), St. Jerome (342–420), St. Gaudentius of Brescia (410–427), St. Paulinus of Nola (353–431), Jacob of Sarug (457–521), the Venerable Bede (673–735), St. Gregory of Tours (538–593), Pope Gregory the Great (590–604), and St. Isidore of Seville (560–636).
These testimonies clearly reveal that the apostolic mission and martyrdom of St. Thomas, one among the twelve apostles of Christ, was part of the collective ecclesial awareness of that time.
The Church Fathers had no doubt that the apostolic mission of St. Thomas was in a culturally ancient land like India. Because of this certainty, they did not attempt any further detailed environmental study or provide extensive geographical information about this missionary destination.
Evidence from Liturgical Tradition
The liturgical traditions of both Eastern and Western Churches, which preserve and pass on the Church’s beliefs and traditions through generations, speak explicitly—both directly and indirectly—about St. Thomas’s Indian apostolate and martyrdom. Ancient martyrologies and liturgical calendars also associate St. Thomas with the Indian Church.
There exists no ancient liturgical tradition anywhere in the Christian world that fails to commemorate St. Thomas the Apostle, who evangelized India and was martyred here. Apocryphal texts—such as the Acts of Judas Thomas (early 3rd century), the Teachings of the Apostles (3rd century), and the Passion of Thomas (4th century)—discuss his apostolic mission and martyrdom in India. The “Acts of Judas Thomas,” believed to be written in Syriac in the third century, gained significant importance and deserves attention.
According to the Acts of Judas Thomas, St. Thomas arrived in India with the support of King Gondophares (also spelled Gundaphorus). After his activities in the king’s court, the apostle reached his final missionary destination at Misdeus (or Masdai) and died there. Tradition identifies this place as being in Mylapore, near modern-day Chennai. Despite its legendary and narrative character, the Acts of Judas Thomas conveys a historical essence regarding the apostle’s Indian missionary work and martyrdom. The identification of a historical King Gondophares, who ruled parts of India during the first quarter of the first century AD, by modern scholarship strengthens the credibility of the Acts.
Local Traditions and Cultural Expressions
Local traditions have preserved the apostolic mission, martyrdom, and burial of St. Thomas in the form of folk songs and ritualistic art forms from ancient times. These later took written form and are still preserved today. Traditional Christian art forms such as Margamkali (a ritual dance describing Thomas’s path of evangelization), Ramban Pattu (Thomaparvam), and Veeradian Pattu (songs sung by Veeradians, Hindu devotees) were performed during Christian weddings and other festive occasions.
The central theme of these art forms is St. Thomas’s arrival at Kodungallur and his subsequent missionary activities. Our forefathers faithfully preserved these traditions and passed them down generation after generation, making them a deeply rooted cultural memory of the apostolic mission of St. Thomas in India. This tradition, entrenched in millions of hearts over the centuries, has not been erased by the tide of history.
However, it is also important to note that those who doubt the apostolate of St. Thomas in India due to the absence of contemporary historical records have failed to produce any credible documentary or archaeological evidence to disprove the tradition.
Tradition holds that St. Thomas was martyred and buried at Mylapore. After his death, Mylapore became a major pilgrimage center for St. Thomas Christians and eventually served as the episcopal center of their community. Until as recently as 1942, the tomb of St. Thomas at Mylapore was revered by Catholics, Orthodox, and even non-Christians alike.
Western Observers’ Testimony
Paulinus of St. Bartholomew, a Carmelite missionary who lived in Malabar between November 14, 1776, and March 10, 1789, proudly declared that he had come to know this land even better than his own homeland. Upon returning to Italy, he wrote:
“All Indians—Christians and non-Christians alike—affirm with certainty that St. Thomas the Apostle was martyred on the hill at Mylapore. Their unwavering and intense belief in the apostle’s martyrdom at Mylapore is equal to the faith of European Christians that St. Peter died in Rome.”
The ancient tomb at Mylapore is considered the only physical burial site of St. Thomas in existence. The uncontested acceptance of this tomb in Mylapore by both local and foreign traditions attests to its authenticity. Had the tomb been a fabricated legend without historical basis, those who promoted it would not have chosen to place it outside Kerala, in a village in Tamil Nadu, far from the apostle’s main missionary field.
The tomb of St. Thomas holds a central place in the spiritual life of the St. Thomas Christians. Until the Synod of Diamper (1599), they regularly went on pilgrimages to Mylapore, took earth from the tomb, and used it in religious rituals.
Historical and Linguistic Context
There had been Jewish presence in South India since the 10th century BC, and the Jews engaged in trade with the region. At that time, Aramaic was the language of trade for the Jews, and it was also spoken in South India. Aramaic was, of course, the spoken language of Jesus Christ.
Jewish colonies existed in places like Kodungallur, Paravur, Kollam, Muttam, and Chekkad. These colonies may have inspired St. Thomas to come to South India. As a Jew himself, he would have felt obligated to first proclaim the message of salvation to the Jews (cf. Matthew 10:6).
Hence, it is reasonable to assume that St. Thomas preached the Gospel to the Jews in India in Aramaic. The first Christian communities he founded were likely in these Jewish settlements. Only after that did he turn his attention to other communities in India. He preached the way of salvation to Buddhists and Hindus, and some Brahmins also accepted the Gospel through him. Thus, the early Christian community in India likely included both Jewish Christians and locals who had embraced the faith.
