വിജാതീയരായിരുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ പ്രൊസെസ്സൂസും, വിശുദ്ധ മാര്‍ട്ടീനിയനും റോമിലെ മാമര്‍ടൈന്‍ കാരാഗ്രഹത്തിലെ കാവല്‍ക്കാര്‍ ആയിരുന്നു. ആ പ്രവിശ്യയിലെ കൊടും കുറ്റവാളികളായിരുന്നു അവിടെ തടവുകാരായി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത്, അവരില്‍ കുറച്ച്‌ പേര്‍ ക്രിസ്ത്യാനികളായിരുന്നു. ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ തടവുകാരെ നിരീക്ഷിക്കുകയും, അവരുടെ പ്രബോധനങ്ങളെ കേള്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത പ്രൊസെസ്സൂസും, മാര്‍ട്ടീനിയനും ക്രമേണ രക്ഷകനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള അറിവിനാല്‍ അനുഗ്രഹീതരായി. അപ്പസ്തോലനായിരുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ പത്രോസ് ആ കാരാഗ്രഹത്തില്‍ തടവുകാരനായി വന്നതിനു ശേഷം പ്രൊസെസ്സൂസും, മാര്‍ട്ടീനിയനും യേശുവില്‍ വിശ്വസിക്കുവാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. അവര്‍ പത്രോസ് അപ്പസ്തോലനില്‍ നിന്നും ജ്ഞാനസ്നാനം സ്വീകരിക്കുകയും പിന്നീട് അദ്ദേഹത്തെ തടവറയില്‍ നിന്നും മോചിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
ആ കാരഗ്രഹത്തിന്റെ മേലധികാരിയായിരുന്ന പോളിനൂസിന് ഇതിനെപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള അറിവ് കിട്ടിയപ്പോള്‍ അദ്ദേഹം വിശുദ്ധന്മാരായ പ്രൊസെസ്സൂസും, മാര്‍ട്ടീനിയനും യേശുവിലുള്ള വിശ്വസം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. എന്നാല്‍ വിശുദ്ധരാകട്ടെ സധൈര്യം യേശുവിലുള്ള തങ്ങളുടെ വിശ്വാസത്തെ ഏറ്റു പറയുകയും, ജൂപ്പീറ്ററിന്റെ സ്വര്‍ണ്ണംകൊണ്ടുള്ള പ്രതിമയുടെ മുഖത്ത് തുപ്പുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇത് കണ്ട പോളിനൂസ് അവരുടെ മുഖത്ത് അടിക്കുവാന്‍ പടയാളികളോട് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. തുടര്‍ന്നു അവരെ ക്രൂരമായി പീഡിപ്പിക്കുവാന്‍ പോളിനൂസ് ഉത്തരവിട്ടു. വിശുദ്ധന്മാരെ ഇരുമ്പ് കമ്പികൊണ്ടടിക്കുകയും, തീപന്തങ്ങള്‍ കൊണ്ട് പൊള്ളിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതിനു ശേഷം അവരെ വീണ്ടും കാരാഗ്രഹത്തിലടച്ചു.
ലൂസിന എന്ന് പേരായ ദൈവഭക്തയായിരുന്ന ഒരു മഹതി തടവറയില്‍ അവരെ സന്ദര്‍ശിക്കുകയും, അവര്‍ക്ക് വേണ്ട സഹായങ്ങള്‍ ചെയ്യുകയും അവരെ പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ക്രൂരനായ പോളിനൂസിനെ ദൈവം അധികം താമസിയാതെ തന്നെ ശിക്ഷിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. ആദ്ദേഹം അന്ധനായി തീരുകയും മൂന്ന് ദിവസങ്ങള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ മരണപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. പോളിനൂസിന്റെ മകന്‍ നഗരത്തിന്റെ ഭരണാധികാരിയുടെ പക്കല്‍ ചെന്ന് പ്രൊസെസ്സൂസിനേയും, മാര്‍ട്ടീനിയനേയും ഉടന്‍ തന്നെ വധിക്കണമെന്ന്‌ ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. അപ്രകാരം 67-ല്‍ വിശുദ്ധന്‍മാര്‍ വാളിനിരയാക്കപ്പെട്ടു. വിശുദ്ധന്മാരായ ആ രക്തസാക്ഷികളുടെ മൃതദേഹങ്ങള്‍ ലൂസിന അടക്കം ചെയ്യുകയുണ്ടായി. ഇപ്പോള്‍ അവരുടെ ശവകുടീരം റോമിലെ സെന്റ്‌ പീറ്റേഴ്സ് ബസിലിക്കയുടെ പാര്‍ശ്വഭാഗത്തായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു.
Saints Processus and Martinian were pagans and served as guards at the Mamertine Prison in Rome. That prison held some of the most dangerous criminals in the region, and among them were a few Christian prisoners. As Processus and Martinian observed the Christians and listened to their teachings, they gradually became enlightened about the Savior.
After Saint Peter the Apostle was imprisoned there, Processus and Martinian began to believe in Jesus. They received baptism from Saint Peter and later helped him escape from the prison.
When Paulinus, the head of the prison, came to know of this, he demanded that Saints Processus and Martinian renounce their faith in Jesus. However, the saints boldly confessed their faith in Jesus and spat on the face of a golden idol of Jupiter. Witnessing this, Paulinus ordered his soldiers to strike them on their faces.
He then commanded them to be brutally tortured. The saints were beaten with iron rods and burned with fiery torches, after which they were imprisoned again.
A devout woman named Lucina visited them in prison, offered assistance, and encouraged them in their suffering. God soon punished the cruel Paulinus: he became blind and died within three days.
Paulinus’s son went to the city’s ruler and demanded the immediate execution of Processus and Martinian. Accordingly, in the year 67, the saints were beheaded. Their bodies were buried by Lucina. Today, their tomb stands on the side of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
