On November 1, 1625, Saint Oliver Plunkett was born into an Anglo-Norman family in Loughcrew, near the town of Oldcastle in the province of Meath, Ireland. In 1647, the saint joined the Irish College in Rome for priestly studies and was ordained a priest in 1654. When Oliver Cromwell invaded Ireland in 1649, it marked the beginning of severe oppression and massacres against Catholics. Though Cromwell left Ireland in 1650, his invasion led to the formulation of numerous laws against Catholics.

In the 1650s, Catholics were expelled from Dublin, and lands owned by Catholic landlords were confiscated. Religious persecutors declared Catholic priests illegal, and those who celebrated Holy Mass were either hanged or exiled to the West Indies. To escape religious persecution, Plunkett decided to remain in Rome and, in 1657, became a professor of theology.

When the persecution of Catholics in Ireland eased, the saint returned to Ireland and, later in 1657, was consecrated as the Archbishop of Armagh. He then undertook efforts to restore the desolate Church, and established many schools to educate theologically illiterate youth and priests. He completely abolished alcoholism among the clergy. About this, the saint wrote: “If an Irish priest can avoid this disaster, he will become a saint.”

In 1670, the saint convened a synod in Dublin, and later summoned several more synods in his archdiocese. However, a long-standing dispute existed between the saint and Peter Talbot, the Archbishop of Dublin, regarding the senior-most ecclesiastical position in Ireland. In addition, the saint became the target of animosity from Franciscan friars for siding with Dominican friars in a land dispute.

In 1673, when religious persecution against Catholics resumed, the saint went into hiding. He refused to comply with a government order that required registration at a port for exile, choosing instead to remain hidden.

In 1678, a fabricated anti-Catholic conspiracy known as the “Popish Plot”, orchestrated by Titus Oates, further fueled persecution against Catholics. Following this, the archbishop was arrested again, and Oliver Plunkett went into hiding once more. The Privy Council in London was misled to believe that the saint was preparing a plan for the French to attack.

In December 1679, Plunkett was imprisoned in Dublin Castle, where he administered the last rites to the dying Peter Talbot. He was then brought to London, and in June 1681, was found guilty. It was priests who bore malice against the saint who provided false testimony for the treason charges.

On July 1, 1681, the saint was hanged at Tyburn, making Saint Plunkett the last Catholic martyr in England. He was beatified in 1920, and in 1975, Oliver Plunkett was officially declared a saint.
