Saint Hyacintha was born in 1585 at Vignarello in Italy. She completed her education at the Franciscan convent of Viterbo, where her own sister was a nun. Unlike others of her age, Claris (Hyacintha’s original name) showed little interest in works of charity. Saint Hyacintha is a saint who differs from many others, for she passed through not one but two major conversions in her life.
Though she was a nun, during her youth she did not faithfully observe the religious rules of her vocation. Even after correcting herself and reforming her life for a time, she soon slipped back into a life marked by irreverence toward God. Later, however, she underwent a lasting and stable conversion and embraced a life filled with penance.
When she was twenty years old, a young man named Marquis Cassisucci rejected her and married her younger sister instead. After this incident, she became angry and impatient, and life at home became unbearable. Unable to endure the situation, her family forced her to join the Franciscan convent at Viterbo. She entered the convent but soon fled from it. After some time, however, she returned, was accepted again, and eventually professed her religious vows.
Nevertheless, due to her lack of patience, for nearly ten years she missed no opportunity to bring disgrace upon the religious community of which she was a part. She showed little regard for religious discipline and did not renounce the comforts and privileges that came from her status and wealth.
Her first conversion occurred when a priest came to hear her confession during an illness. Seeing the luxurious furnishings in her room, the priest exclaimed in astonishment that she was living in the convent only to serve Satan. This remark struck her deeply and shattered her spiritual pride. With intense and exaggerated devotion, she decided to reform her life.
Although she took a major step toward God, after some time she again returned to her former way of life. She fell ill once more, this time with a much more serious condition. She again underwent a conversion, and this time returned fully to the kind of life God desired of her. She became a model of patience, repentance, prayer, tireless good works, gentleness, and generosity.
From that moment onward, she committed herself to a life of strict discipline, constant fasting, and long hours of prayer without sleep. That a woman once known for her lack of discipline became an exemplary nun is truly remarkable. She possessed an extraordinary ability to guide others and offered practical spiritual advice through letters to those who sought her counsel on self-discipline in both spiritual and material matters.
Saint Hyacintha’s works of charity were highly commendable. Her charitable efforts were not confined to her own religious community alone. Through her influence, two associations were formed in Viterbo to care for the elderly and the sick, whose members dedicated their lives to this service. All the wealth she received through donations as a result of her petitions was spent entirely for these charitable works.
The faith of Saint Hyacintha remains alive even today. When she was called to follow a life path filled with twists and trials, she embraced it with courage. On January 30, 1640, Saint Hyacintha departed to the presence of God. She was canonized in 1807. Her life stands as a clear example of how, with God’s help, the sufferings of life can be transformed into blessings.
