Saint Timothy
Saint Timothy, the most beloved disciple of Saint Paul, is said to have been a native of Lystra in Lycaonia. His mother Eunice was a Jew by religion. Later, both his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois embraced the Christian faith. From his youth itself, Saint Timothy made the Holy Scriptures the subject of his study.
When Saint Paul came to Lycaonia to proclaim the Gospel, the apostles of Iconium and Lystra testified that Timothy was a man of good character. Therefore, Saint Paul chose Timothy as his companion in place of Barnabas. Since Timothy’s mother was of Jewish origin, Saint Paul agreed to have Timothy circumcised. However, he did not agree to circumcise Titus, who was born of non-Jewish parents. This decision was meant to affirm the freedom of the Gospel and to respond to those who wrongly interpreted circumcision.
Another reason behind Saint Paul’s decision was to make Timothy more acceptable to the Jews and to convince them that he was not opposed to their law. For this foresight, Saint John Chrysostom praises Paul. Thus, Saint Paul laid his hands upon Timothy’s head and accepted him into his evangelical mission. From that moment onward, Saint Paul received Timothy as both his disciple and brother.
Saint Paul referred to Timothy as a “man of God.” In his letter to the Philippians, he clearly states that he had never seen anyone as closely united to his own spirit as Timothy. Saint Paul traveled from Lystra to other parts of Asia, then to Macedonia, and preached the Gospel in Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea. Due to strong opposition from the Jews, he decided to leave Berea, but asked Timothy to remain there to safeguard the faith of those who had been converted.
However, when Paul reached Athens, he instructed that Timothy be recalled. Soon afterward, upon hearing that the Christians in Thessalonica were undergoing severe persecution, Paul sent Timothy to Thessalonica to strengthen and encourage them. Later, Timothy met his mentor in Corinth and informed him of the fruits of his mission. It was following this report that Saint Paul wrote his First Letter to the Thessalonians.
From Corinth, Saint Paul went to Jerusalem, and from there to Ephesus, where he spent about two years. After that, in AD 58, he decided to return to Greece. In order to inform the faithful of his coming and to collect contributions for the Christians in Jerusalem, he sent Timothy and Erastus ahead of him to Greece via Macedonia.
After a few years, Timothy went to Corinth again, renewed the faith of the Christians there, and drew them closer to divine love. Saint Paul waited in Asia for Timothy’s return. Some years later, they traveled together to Macedonia and Achaia. Although Paul and Timothy separated at Philippi, they reunited again at Troas.
While returning to Palestine, Paul the Apostle was imprisoned at Caesarea. After two years of imprisonment, he was sent to Rome. It is said that Saint Timothy remained with the Apostle throughout this period. Paul had Timothy write the headings of his Letters to Philemon and to the Philippians. Saint Timothy himself was imprisoned for Christ and publicly confessed the name of Jesus before many witnesses, though he was later released. Soon afterward, he was ordained a bishop.
Saint Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, returned from Rome to the East and entrusted Timothy with governing the Church of Ephesus, as well as with ordaining priests, deacons, and even bishops. According to the Church Fathers, Saint Paul appointed Timothy to govern all the churches of Asia. Timothy is considered to be the first Bishop of Ephesus.
Saint Paul wrote his First Letter to Timothy from Macedonia. He also asked Timothy to visit him once more, wishing to see his beloved son before his death. This request can be described as an outpouring of the Apostle’s deep love for Timothy. Before his death, Saint Paul urged Timothy to rekindle the gift of the Holy Spirit he had received at his ordination and warned him about certain problems troubling the Church.
Saint Timothy drank only water, and his severe ascetic life weakened his health. It is assumed that Saint Paul installed Timothy as Bishop of Ephesus before Saint John the Apostle came there. There is a belief that Saint John later resided in that city and exercised authority over all the churches of Asia. Ancient martyrologies mention Saint Timothy as a martyr.
Some records of the “Acts of Saint Timothy” are attributed to Polycrates, the renowned Bishop of Ephesus, though it is said that these were written in Ephesus during the fourth or fifth century and later summarized by Photius. Timothy’s martyrdom occurred because he opposed a pagan festival known as Katagogia, which was celebrated on January 22. Historical records state that in AD 97, during the reign of Emperor Nerva, idol worshippers stoned and beat Saint Timothy to death. His earthly remains were later transferred to Constantinople during the reign of Constantius.
Saint Titus
Saint Titus was a faithful friend, disciple, and constant companion of the Apostle Paul. Though born in Antioch, he was a Greek. Being a Gentile, Paul did not compel Titus to undergo circumcision. Titus is known as an able administrator and peacemaker. Saint Paul describes Titus in his Letters to the Corinthians as follows:
“Thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus the same earnest care I have for you. For he not only accepted our appeal, but being himself very earnest, he went to you of his own accord.”
(2 Corinthians 8:16–17)
Again and again, in his letters to the Corinthians, Paul praises the services of Titus.
From Paul’s Letter to Titus, we understand that Titus governed the Church on the island of Crete. It is believed that Titus lived 27 years after the martyrdom of Saint Paul, and that he too eventually died as a martyr.
