Three accounts of the conversion of Saint Paul are found in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 9:1–19; 22:3–21; 26:9–23).

Saint Paul was born in Tarsus of Cilicia. His original name was Saul. His parents were Jews belonging to the tribe of Benjamin, and by birth he was a Roman citizen. Saint Paul was also among those who took part in the stoning of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, and of another elderly man. Around the year 63 AD, while writing the Epistle to Philemon, Saint Paul was already an old man. From this, it may be inferred that he was probably born around the beginning of the Christian era.

To complete his education, Paul went to Jerusalem, where he became a disciple of the learned Gamaliel. He received a strict education according to the ancestral Jewish Law. He acquired profound scholarship in biblical interpretation and also received solid training in logic and debate. Even before Christ began His public ministry in Palestine, Paul had returned to Tarsus as a zealous and fervent Pharisee.

A short time after the death of our Savior, Saint Paul returned to Palestine. His intense religious conviction and uncontrollable zeal gradually turned into fanatic hostility against the infant Christian Church. This led him to participate in the stoning of Saint Stephen and in the subsequent persecution of Christians.

With an official mandate from the High Priest, Paul set out for Damascus, with the mission of arresting Christians there and bringing them back to Jerusalem in chains. As he approached Damascus around midday, suddenly a great dazzling light from heaven flashed around him. Jesus appeared to him in His glorious body, spoke to him directly, and turned him away from the mission of persecution that he had been pursuing so zealously.

At that moment, Saint Paul’s soul underwent a sudden and profound transformation. He immediately embraced faith in Christ, received Baptism, and took the name Paul instead of Saul. He traveled to many places, preaching the Gospel and spreading the faith. Around 65 AD, in Rome, he received the crown of martyrdom as an Apostle.
