Saint Vincent, who received the crown of martyrdom in the year 304 under Emperor Diocletian, was a deacon of Saragossa. As Saint Augustine testified in a sermon delivered in the year 275, the acts of this saint were read in the churches of Africa until the end of the fourth century. The information presently known about him has been gathered mainly from traditions dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries.

According to the account of Prudentius concerning the martyrdom of the saint, Saint Vincent was born in Saragossa, Spain. His parents were named Euthicius and Enola. He received a high level of education under Valerius, the Bishop of Saragossa. Soon afterward, he was ordained as a deacon. Since Bishop Valerius suffered from a speech impediment, the saint was appointed to preach throughout the diocese on his behalf.

By order of the governor Dacian, Saint Vincent and his bishop were bound in chains, dragged to Valencia, and imprisoned there for a long time. Saint Vincent was subjected to various brutal tortures, including beatings with whips and other lethal instruments. After this, he was imprisoned again in a cell strewn with sharp iron fragments. Later, he was laid upon a soft mattress, which was constantly shaken in an attempt to break his resolve. It was there that he departed to the presence of God.

Although the saint’s body was thrown out to be eaten by vultures, a raven stood guard over it, protecting it. Later, Governor Dacian ordered the body to be thrown into the sea, but it was washed ashore, and a devout widow buried it with proper reverence.

After peace was restored to the Church in later times, a church was built outside Valencia. It is said that in 1175, the relics of the saint were brought to Lisbon. According to some historians, the relics were taken instead to Castres. It is also claimed that relics of the saint exist in Cremona and Bari.

In the year 542, King Childeric I brought the sole of the saint’s footwear and a portion of his garment to Paris, and later a church was built in his honor, which came to be known as Saint-Germain-des-Prés. As early as 455, a church dedicated to the saint existed at Regimont, near Béziers. In Rome, three churches were dedicated to this saint—one near St. Peter’s, another in Trastevere, and a third built by Pope Honorius I (625–638).

On a pillar dating from the 6th or 7th century, discovered in the basilica of Salona in Dalmatia, hymns praising the saint are found engraved. In the Roman Martyrology, the feast day of Saint Vincent is recorded as January 22. The Greeks celebrate his feast on November 11, together with Saint Anastasius of Persia. Among the martyrs of Spain, this saint is considered the most renowned, and he is regarded as a patron of deacons. Bricklayers, sailors, and others also invoke this saint’s intercession.
