January 21:

Ant., Lauds). (2. Ant).

Ant. Lauds). Ant., Lauds).

Saint Agnes is one of the most radiant saints in the Roman calendar. She is a saint whom many of the great Fathers of the Church have spoken of with deep reverence. Saint Jerome writes as follows:
“Most nations of the world, especially the Christian community, can be seen commemorating the life of Saint Agnes through words and writings. Even at a very tender age, she was able to triumph over a cruel ruler.”

When we trace the origin of the name Agnes, we find the Latin word “Agna,” meaning ‘lamb,’ and the Greek word “Hagne,” meaning ‘purity.’ Theologians say that eight days after the saint’s death, a lamb appeared to her parents, accompanied by a procession of virgins. Over the saint’s tomb, Emperor Constantine built a church, in which the great Pope Saint Gregory delivered many sermons.

One day, while Agnes was returning from school, Symphronius, the son of the city’s chief magistrate, happened to see her. At that time, she was only thirteen years old. Captivated by her at first sight, Symphronius attempted to win her heart with numerous gifts. But Agnes replied as follows:
“Go away from me, food of death, for I have already found another Lord” (2 Ant.).
“My marriage has been arranged with Christ, whose beauty is adored by the sun and the moon, and whom the angels serve. For Him I have preserved my purity, and with my whole heart I have consecrated myself to Him” (6 Ant.).

“With His ring, my Lord Jesus Christ has espoused me, and with the crown of a bride He has adorned me” (3 Ant., Lauds).
“My right hand and my neck are encircled with precious stones; He has given me earrings made of priceless pearls. He has adorned me with resplendent jewels” (2 Ant.).
“The Lord has clothed me in a garment woven with gold and has beautified me with many costly ornaments” (4 Ant.).
“His words flow within me like honey and milk, and His blood gives my cheeks a rosy glow” (5 Ant.).

“I love my Jesus; the song of Him, who is the Son of a Virgin and of One who knew no woman, is sweetness to my ears. When I love Him, I remain chaste; when I touch Him, I become pure; when I possess Him, I remain a virgin” (2 Resp.).

Enraged by her reply, Symphronius accused her falsely and betrayed her to his father, the city magistrate. He threatened to place her in a house where sinful women lived, but the saint calmly replied:
“An angel of my Lord stands guard to protect my body” (2 Ant., Lauds).

Angered by her response, the magistrate sent her to that infamous house, and as soon as she entered it, the angel of the Lord was seen standing there to protect her (1 Ant., Lauds). A bright light surrounded her, blinding all who attempted to approach her.

When a pagan priest falsely accused her of practicing sorcery, the judge ordered that she be thrown into the fire. As the flames rose around her, she stretched out her hands and prayed to God, saying:
“I praise You, the greatest and most worthy of all worship, because through Your Only-Begotten Son You have delivered me from the threats of a cruel ruler and enabled me to overcome the snares of Satan. I am coming to You whom I have loved, whom I have sought, whom I have desired. Receive me, for with my lips I praise You, and with all my soul and all my strength I long for You.”

When the flames were extinguished, she continued:
“I praise You, O God, Father of my Savior, because by the mercy of Your Son the fire that surrounded me has been quenched. I am going to receive what I hoped for; in heaven I shall be united with Him whom I loved most on earth” (Ben. Ant.).

Then her desire was fulfilled. The judge ordered that she be beheaded. Thus Saint Agnes, preserving her perfect purity, received the crown of martyrdom.
