During the reign of Emperor Claudius II (268–270), Saint Marius, a Persian and a member of a noble family, came to Rome along with his wife Saint Martha and their sons Audifax and Abachus, in order to venerate the tombs of the martyrs. They visited Christians who were in prison and offered them comfort through their words and actions. In addition, they buried the bodies of many martyrs.
Before long, they were arrested. Although they were subjected to many threats and temptations, being urged to offer sacrifices to pagan idols, they remained steadfast in their faith and therefore had to endure cruel beatings. Saint Martha was the first to submit to death. Before dying, she strongly exhorted her husband and sons not to abandon their faith, no matter what sufferings and torments they might have to endure.
At the same place, all of them were beheaded, and their bodies were thrown into the fire. Another saint named Felicitas recovered their partially burned bodies and buried them in her own field. Until the twentieth century, the feast day of these saints was not recorded in the Roman calendar.
