January 17:

Saint Anthony the Great, known as the “Father of Monks,” holds a very exalted place in Christian history. He was born around 250 AD in Middle Egypt. His parents were people of great virtue and dignity. After their sudden death, Anthony dedicated his entire life to works that would lead him to eternal life.

One day, while he was in church, he happened to hear a verse from the Gospel which said:
“If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor.” (Matthew 19:21)
Anthony felt that Christ was speaking these words directly and personally to him. Without delay, he sold all his possessions and gave them to the poor. Around 270, he went into the desert to live a life totally dedicated to God.

When he became weary, the bed on which he lay was a hard rock. He subjected himself to severe austerities. His food consisted only of bread and salt, and he drank only water. He never ate before sunset. It is said that sometimes he would spend two whole days and nights without eating, remaining continuously in prayer.

The saint was constantly subjected to demonic attacks, but all of these only served to increase his holiness and devotion. He urged his disciples to defeat Satan through voluntary poverty, deep love for Christ, humility, fasting, and the sign of the Cross.

In 356, when Saint Anthony was 105 years old, he died on Mount Kolzim near the Red Sea. One year later, his friend and fearless bishop, Saint Athanasius, wrote the biography of Saint Anthony. This work became the classic book of monastic life for many centuries.

According to Saint Anthony, the goal of the monastic life is not to destroy the body, but rather to bring it under control and harmonize it with the mercy God has given.

For about twenty years, Saint Anthony lived in complete solitude. No suffering disturbed him, and no pleasure blinded him. The flattering praises and admiration of people never moved him. In short, the vanities of this world had no power over him. He lived with inner peace and harmony, guided by sound reason.

These are some of the words he spoke to monks:

“Our chief goal must be never to grow weary before we complete the task we have begun. In days of trial and suffering, we must not lose courage but say: ‘My children, let us preserve our monastic life. Let us not grow weak or broken-hearted. If we keep before our eyes the image of death at all times, we shall not sin.’ This is what the words of the Apostles tell us.”

And again:

“Each morning we should rise with the awareness that we may not live until evening, and each night we should lie down with the awareness that we may not wake up in the morning. For there is no certainty about our life. If we live with this understanding and obey the words of the Apostles, we shall not fall into sin. No desire will enslave us, no anger will disturb us, no treasure will bind us to this world. With a heart made free, we shall be able to face death.”

These were the words Saint Anthony spoke to the monks.
