Blessed Devasahayam Pillai was an official in the Kingdom of Travancore in the eighteenth century who renounced the Hindu faith and embraced Christianity. He was born on 23 April 1712 at Nattalam in Kanyakumari district. Before his conversion he was known as Neelakanda Pillai and served as a court official (Diwan’s assistant) in the palace of Marthanda Varma. After the Battle of Colachel, in which the Travancore army defeated the Dutch forces, Maharaja Marthanda Varma entrusted the reorganization of the Travancore army to the Dutch commander De Lannoy. Pillai was appointed as his assistant, and it was from him that Pillai first came to know about Jesus Christ.
Later, on 17 May 1745, Pillai received baptism from a Jesuit missionary named Buttari, who was working at Neyyattinkara in southern Travancore, and he was given the name Devasahayam Pillai, meaning “Lazarus.” Having come to know Christ, Pillai could not keep the faith to himself. He preached Christ in places such as Ramapuram, Vadakkekulam, and Neyyattinkara. This provoked the anger of the royal servants and his own colleagues. With the support of Ramayyan Dalawa, who was hostile to the Namboodiri community, they conspired against Pillai, charged him with treason, and brought him before the king.
The king ordered him: “If you want to live, abandon Christ.” But Pillai, who loved Christ more than his own life, refused to renounce Him. The king ordered that Pillai’s hands and feet be bound and that he be flogged daily, thirty lashes at a time. Even passers-by took pleasure in beating him. He was subjected to many forms of torture: smoke was blown around him with burning chili powder, he was garlanded with poisonous erukku flowers and paraded on a buffalo under the scorching sun, chili was rubbed into his wounds, and he was imprisoned for four years.
On 14 January 1752, the king’s soldiers took Pillai to a rock on Kattadi Hill with orders to shoot him dead. Knowing that his time had come, Pillai asked for permission to pray one last time. The image of him praying on his knees, chained to the rock, later became a powerful symbol in the history of faith. Thus he won the crown of martyrdom. Even today, a painting of Devasahayam Pillai praying on his knees in chains bears witness to his heroic faith.
In 2004, the Tamil Nadu region of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India recommended to the Vatican that Devasahayam Pillai be raised to sainthood. In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI approved the process to recognize him as a martyr saint. On 2 December 2012, the Catholic Church declared him Blessed. On that occasion, Cardinal Angelo Amato, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, described Devasahayam Pillai as a symbol of the Indian conscience and of Tamil culture. Finally, on 15 May 2022, in the presence of tens of thousands, Pope Francis canonized Devasahayam Pillai as a Saint.
