Hilary, known as the Great Doctor of the Church, was born in AD 315 at Poitiers in Aquitaine. Hilary was originally a pagan, but by chance he came to read the Holy Bible. The truths of Sacred Scripture revealed to him the true God, and he immediately embraced Christianity. Soon afterward he also brought his wife and children into the Christian faith. He was already middle-aged when he became a Christian. After a short time, Hilary received Holy Orders and became a priest. In 353, he was appointed bishop of his native place. This was a time when the Arian heresy was flourishing.

The Arians had the support of the Emperor Constantius. To resist their growing influence, Saint Hilary took part in many local synods. Because he strongly opposed the Arian heretics, they accused him before the emperor and had him exiled to Phrygia. It was during this period that the saint wrote a great treatise on the Holy Trinity. He also took part in the Council of Seleucia, where Catholics and Arians struggled for supremacy, and there defeated the Arian party.

Afterwards, the saint traveled through Constantinople, Gaul, Illyria, and other regions, preaching against heresies and strengthening the Catholic faith. He began every work with the praise of God, and he lived continually in prayer and meditation on divine things day and night. After eight years of apostolic labor, Saint Hilary returned to Poitiers and died peacefully in AD 363.
