Saint Benedict Biscop was born in AD 628 into a noble family in Northumbria. His original name was Biscop Baducing. In his early youth he served as a landholder of the agricultural estates under King Oswiu. At the age of 25, he left this service, abandoned his lands and gardens, and set out for Rome.
In the northern parts of England, the existing Christian practices had their roots in Ireland. However, the Christian customs that the saint saw in Rome were completely different. He was deeply attracted by the Roman forms of faith and worship.
Taking an assistant named Wilfred with him, the saint returned to Northumbria. There he began to spread the Roman Christian faith and liturgical practices he had seen in Rome. Because of his continuous efforts, in 664 King Oswiu declared that the Roman form of Christianity would replace the Irish form in his kingdom.
In 666, the saint joined the monastery on the island of Lérins in southern France for missionary formation. It was there that he changed his name to Benedict. In 668, in order to study Roman customs more deeply, the saint went to Rome once again.
In 673, Benedict Biscop returned to Northumbria and obtained permission and financial support from King Ecgfrith, the successor of Oswiu, to establish a monastery. Thus, in 674, he founded the Monastery of St. Peter at Wearmouth. It was a large and historically important Roman-style structure. Craftsmen and other workers were brought from France for its construction.
Through the saint’s special efforts, the Rule of Saint Benedict was introduced in the monastery. He also established a library by collecting the books he had gathered during his travels—but even this did not satisfy him. In 679, Saint Benedict went again to Rome. This journey was to bring back relics, works of art, and manuscripts for his monastery. He also aimed to bring back monastic vestments and new ideas. He returned after obtaining special privileges from the Holy Father and various documents of the Roman liturgy for training the monks.
At the age of 52, he returned to England. The following year, with the financial assistance he received from Ecgfrith, he built two churches and dedicated them in Jarrow (also in Northumbria) in the name of Saint Paul.
In 682, he went again to Rome. He stayed there for four years. When he returned, the buildings he had founded were once again enriched with precious manuscripts and books. Because of age-related illnesses, his health declined severely. On January 12, 690, he fell asleep in the Lord.
Saint Benedict played a very great role in spreading the Catholic Church in northern England. One of the monks who grew up in the monastery he founded was Bede, who became the greatest scholar of that age. There is no doubt that through this disciple, the Church’s teachings spread from England to other parts of Europe. One of Bede’s most famous works, “The Lives of the Abbots of Wearmouth and Jarrow,” is an authoritative book that also describes Saint Benedict in detail.
Pope Gregory described Saint Benedict as:
“More than merely a man of honorable life, he was blessed alike in name and in deed.”
