William of Bourges was born in Renaix, Belgium, into a noble family. From childhood itself, William showed contempt for wealth and worldly luxury. Aware of their dangers, the boy turned his attention to study, the life of faith, and toward the priesthood. After becoming a priest, he served in Soissons and Paris. Later he moved to Grandmont. There, seeing conflicts between priests and brothers, William joined the Cistercian Order and received the religious habit. His exemplary life attracted everyone. He was later appointed superior at Pontigny, and soon after became abbot. His heart was pure through humility and simplicity, and God granted him the sweetness of deep prayer.

In 1200, when the Archbishop of Bourges died, Abbot William was chosen for that position. Only after insistent commands from the Pope and Church authorities did he leave his solitude and accept the episcopal throne. Even as archbishop, William only increased his austerities. Under his clothing he wore a hair-shirt. He always abstained from meat. He constantly said that God had appointed him to serve the poor.

With charity and love, he converted many Albigensian heretics. He delivered his final sermon while suffering from fever. As the fever increased, he received the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion. He began the midnight prayers early, but could say only two words before he could no longer speak. Then, according to his instruction, he was laid on ashes wearing his hair-shirt. Soon after, he passed away. Nine years after William’s death, he was declared a saint.
