Saints Julian and Basilissa lived in Egypt. Although they were united in marriage, by mutual consent they lived a celibate life, one that was monastic in character. They spent all their income on helping the poor and the sick. They did not hesitate to turn their own home into a hospital, becoming a refuge and shelter for the needy who came to them.
In that hospital, there were separate accommodations for men and women. The general supervision was handled by Saint Julian, while Saint Basilissa took care of everything concerning the women’s residence. Inspired by their way of life, many people dedicated themselves to works of charity.
After enduring seven cruel persecutions, Saint Basilissa died peacefully. A few years after her death, Saint Julian was crowned with martyrdom, together with seven Christian believers.
Most of the churches and hospitals in the Western and Eastern lands are dedicated in the names of Saints Julian and Basilissa. In Rome, four churches, and in Paris, five churches, dedicated to Saint Julian bear the title “Saint Julian, the Hospitaller and Martyr.”
In the time of Saint Gregory the Great, the skull of Saint Julian was brought from the East to France and given to Queen Brunhild. She placed it in a convent she had founded at Étampes. A part of it is still venerated today in the Church of Saint Basilissa in Paris.
