The History Behind the Feast of Denaha, or Epiphany

For many people, the bustle and celebrations of Christmas come to an end by December 26. However, when viewed through the lens of Christian history, Christmas is a celebration that lasts for twelve days, that is, until January 6. The feast that marks the conclusion of Christmas is the Feast of Denaha, also known as the Feast of Manifestation (Epiphany). In Kerala, this day is also known as Pindiperunnal.

According to the Latin tradition of the Catholic Church, the Feast of Denaha is a commemoration of the revelation that Jesus is the Son of God. Although this feast primarily recalls the revelation given to the three wise men (the Magi) concerning the birth of Jesus, it also includes the remembrance of Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan and the wedding feast at Cana.

Among Eastern Catholics, this feast is known as Theophany, and it is observed as the commemoration of Jesus’ baptism in the River Jordan. The foundational event behind this feast is the revelation, at the time of His baptism, that “Jesus is the Son of God.” According to tradition, although Denaha is celebrated on January 6, unlike other Western Churches, in America, the Feast of the Baptism of Christ is celebrated on the Sunday following this date.

However, Catholic priest Fr. Hezekias Karasso, the founder and executive director of the Institute of Catholic Culture in Virginia, explains that the meaning of this feast goes much deeper than simply marking the end of Christmas or being a day for giving gifts. He says:

“It is impossible to understand Christmas without Theophany, or in other words, to understand Christmas without the Feast of Denaha. Whether Jesus was a child or at the moment of His baptism, the revelation that ‘Jesus is the Son of God’ illuminates the mysteries of Christmas.”

These are the words of Fr. Hezekias.

The Origin of the Feast of Denaha

Both the Western Feast of Epiphany (a word derived from Greek meaning “revelation from above”) and the Eastern Feast of Theophany (meaning “revelation of God”) developed their own traditions and liturgical significance, while sharing many elements in common beyond simply being celebrated on the same day.

Early Christians—especially those in Eastern regions—celebrated the Nativity, the visit of the Magi, the baptism of Christ, and the wedding at Cana all together on the same day as the Feast of Epiphany.

From the fourth century onward, some dioceses began celebrating Christmas and Epiphany as two separate feasts. At the Council of Tours in 567, it was decided to celebrate Christmas on December 25 and Epiphany on January 6, and the twelve-day period between them came to be called the Christmas Season.

Over time, Western Churches assigned separate feast days to the other events associated with Epiphany, and January 6 came to be celebrated specifically as the remembrance of the visit of the three Magi to the Infant Jesus. Meanwhile, Eastern Churches began celebrating this day as Theophany, marking it as one of the holiest days in the liturgical calendar, focused on the baptism of Christ.

Roman Traditions

In connection with the visit of the Magi—described in the Bible as wise men from the East—the Roman Church developed its own distinctive customs. As part of the Epiphany commemoration, it became customary to proclaim important days of remembrance, including the date of Easter and other major feasts, to help the faithful understand their significance.

In Italy, children traditionally received sweets and gifts not on Christmas Day, but on Epiphany. In many regions of Latin America, as well as in the Philippines, Portugal, and Spain, children continue to receive gifts on the day commemorating the three wise kings.

In Ireland, Catholics developed the custom of celebrating “Women’s Christmas”, a day on which women rested, enjoyed special meals, and celebrated together.

In Poland, the Epiphany celebration included the blessing of chalk, gold, frankincense, and aromatic substances during the Holy Mass. In homes, family members would write the first digits of the year on their doors, followed by the letters “K+M+B”, and then the remaining digits of the year. Historians explain that K+M+B may represent the first letters of the names of the Magi—Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—or may be an abbreviation of the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat” (“May Christ bless this house”), or simply “Christ bless this house.”

In many parts of the world, Catholics celebrate Epiphany by eating King’s Cake—a sweet cake decorated with a small figurine or dried fruits. In some places, the person who finds the figurine is offered a special feast either on that day or on February 2, traditionally regarded as the end of the Denaha season. These celebrations highlight the family-centered nature of Epiphany and its connection to the Holy Family.

The Revelation of God

Although the Bible does not specify the exact number or names of the Magi, we know that they were wise, wealthy, and above all courageous. The gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh not only signify the revelation received by the Magi that Jesus is the Son of God and King of Kings, but also foreshadow Christ’s death on the cross. Fragrant spices were typically used for burial rites, and these gifts hint prophetically at what was to come.

By conquering death and restoring life, the Feast of Theophany is closely connected to Jesus’ crucifixion. This feast reflects Eastern symbolic theology, which links these two events. Just like the Nativity, the baptism of our Lord is not merely a historical event, but a revelation.

As part of the celebration of this feast, Eastern Christians began offering the Divine Liturgy, which included the blessing of the baptismal waters. The faithful drink this water and preserve it in bottles at home, not only for physical healing but also for spiritual healing. In many parishes, food was distributed after the liturgical celebrations. In Middle Eastern regions, it was customary to prepare fried dough soaked in honey as part of the feast.
