Saint John Neumann was born on March 28, 1811, in the village of Prachatitz in Bohemia, as one of the six children of a stocking weaver. Saint John learned deep piety and devotion to God from his mother. Inspired by her, he entered the seminary at Budweis.

During his seminary years, John cherished a strong desire to go to America as a missionary. Accordingly, he left his homeland and in 1836 received priestly ordination from Bishop John Dubois of New York. For nearly four years, he spent his time in Buffalo and the surrounding regions, building churches and establishing schools.

In 1840, the saint became a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists). Eight years later, he obtained American citizenship. By order of Pope Pius IX, he was consecrated as the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia. His proficiency in about eight languages greatly supported his evangelizing mission. Saint John holds a prominent place among those who worked for the Parochial School System in America, where religious instruction was taught alongside general education.

A notable event in the saint’s life was his participation in Rome at the proclamation ceremony of the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a result of his efforts, the Forty Hours’ Devotion was introduced in the Diocese of Philadelphia. He also built the first church in America for Italian-speaking Catholics. Saint John Neumann was also the founder of the Glen Riddle branch of the Third Order of Saint Francis for women religious.

On January 5, 1860, at the age of 48, the saint collapsed on the street, ceased all his missionary labors, and fell asleep in the Lord. He was buried beneath the altar of the lower church of Saint Peter’s Church in Philadelphia.
