Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton was born on August 28, 1774, in New York City. She was a wife, a mother, and the founder of a religious congregation. Her father was a distinguished physician and a well-known professor at the old institution that is now known as Columbia University. She was raised in the Episcopal Church tradition and received a good education. From her early childhood, she showed great compassion toward the poor.
In 1794, she married William Seton. They had five children through this marriage. As William’s health deteriorated, their wealth was completely depleted. In 1803, they traveled to Italy to stay with their friend Filicchi of Livorno, who was a Catholic. Six weeks after arriving in Italy, William died. Following her husband’s death, six months later Saint Elizabeth Ann returned to New York. By that time, she had already embraced the Catholic faith. Because of this, she faced strong opposition from her friends who belonged to the Episcopal Church. Nevertheless, on March 4, 1805, she was formally received into the Catholic Church.
Abandoned by both friends and relatives, Elizabeth was invited by the Superior of the Sulpician Fathers in Baltimore to start a school for girls in that city. The school that was thus established grew and developed steadily. With the permission of the Bishop of Baltimore, the Superior of the Sulpicians allowed Elizabeth and her companions to embrace religious life, granting them religious vows and the religious habit.
In 1809, the saint moved with her small community to Emmitsburg, Maryland, where they joined the congregation of the Sisters of Charity, founded by Saint Vincent de Paul. However, she never abandoned her service to the poor, especially people of African descent. Saint Elizabeth laid the foundation for the American parochial school system, in which religious instruction was given alongside general education. She also trained teachers and prepared numerous textbooks for use in schools. In addition, she founded many orphanages in New York City and Philadelphia.
On January 4, 1821, Saint Elizabeth passed away at Emmitsburg. In 1963, Pope John XXIII proposed her for sainthood, and in 1975, Pope Paul VI officially canonized Elizabeth Ann Seton as a saint.
