Saint Basil

Saint Basil was born in AD 330. He was the eldest of four children in his family. Three of his siblings also became bishops, one of whom was Saint Gregory of Nyssa. Saint Basil’s grandmother, Macrina, who was deeply devoted to God, had a significant influence on his religious education. Saint Basil himself said, “I can never forget the profound impact of the words of that venerable grandmother and their example on my soul.” From youth to adulthood, Saint Basil maintained a profound friendship with Saint Gregory of Nyssa in Nysa. If Saint Bernard is considered the father of Western monastic life, Saint Basil is regarded as the father of Eastern monasticism.

As a bishop, Saint Basil was a courageous warrior defending Catholic faith against heresy. In AD 372, Emperor Valens sent Modestus, his right-hand man in Byzantium, to Cappadocia to formally present Arianism as the official faith. Modestus approached the bishop, threatened to punish him, destroy him, exile him, and even martyr him if he opposed the heresy. None of these threats from the Byzantine autocrat could deter Saint Basil.

With calm faith in God, Saint Basil replied, “Is that all? Nothing you have said has touched me. We possess nothing, nothing can be taken from our hands. Exile is impossible, for I am in my home wherever I am on God’s earth. Persecutions cannot weaken me, for I have no body. If you wish to kill me, I welcome it, for I shall see God at once. In a way, I am already dead; I have long prepared myself to go to the tomb.” Amazed by this answer, the official said, “No one has ever spoken to me with such courage.” Saint Basil responded, “Perhaps you have never encountered a bishop before.” When Modestus returned to Emperor Valens, he reported, “We did our utmost before the head of the Church, but he was stronger than our threats, firm in his words, and unaffected by temptations.”

Saint Basil was a person of great character and a shining light of his age. Yet, just as fire from a flame brings warmth and light to the world while consuming itself, Saint Basil’s spiritual elevation coincided with physical weakening. By the age of 49, his body resembled that of a one-year-old child. He demonstrated extraordinary ability and zeal in all ecclesiastical activities. He was known as a great theologian, a powerful preacher of the Gospel, and a gifted writer. He wrote two monastic rules and is renowned as a reformer of the Eastern liturgy. In AD 379, at the age of 49, Saint Basil fell asleep in the Lord. At his death, his body was reduced to skin and bones.

Saint Gregory of Nyssa

Saint Gregory was born in AD 339 in Nyssa, Cappadocia, to Greek parents who gave him the double title of “The Theologian.” He was one of the three lights the Church received from Cappadocia. He owed the foundation of his holy life to his devout mother and the nun who raised him. He completed his education at the highly esteemed Caesarean school in Athens and Alexandria. In Athens, he began his lifelong close friendship with Saint Basil. This friendship endured warmly until AD 381, when he delivered Saint Basil’s funeral oration.

Saint Gregory received baptism in 360 and lived for some time in solitary retreat in a monastery. Later, in 372, Saint Basil ordained Gregory as bishop. Following the wishes of his father, who was also a bishop in Nyssa, Gregory assisted his father in caring for the sick. In 381, he became the head of the holy Church in Constantinople. However, due to controversies, he resigned and returned to solitary life, dedicating himself entirely to a contemplative life.

Throughout his life, Saint Gregory alternated between solitary living and active engagement in the energetic work of the Gospel. While he preferred a life of solitude, circumstances repeatedly required him to participate in preaching and ecclesiastical duties. Saint Gregory can also be described as a powerful orator of early Christian heritage; all his great achievements were intertwined with his skill in preaching. His various writings earned him the title of “The Theologian of the Church.”
