After Christmas, there was a period when Rome, like the Eastern Churches, desired to honor the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. As a result, beginning in the seventh century, January 1 came to be celebrated as the “Anniversary of Saint Mary” (Natale Sanctae Mariae). Strictly speaking, this day can be described as the first Marian feast in the Roman liturgical calendar.
From that time onward, the custom began of celebrating the feast of the Holy Mother of God on New Year’s Day, which is the eighth day of Christmas. There is no doubt that the divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a profoundly theological reality. The glorification of the Blessed Mother is, for us, a source of salvation, because “through her we received the Author of life.”
The uniqueness of January 1 as Mary’s feast lies in the meeting point of liturgical devotion and popular devotion. Liturgical devotion celebrates this mystery in accordance with the norms of worship, while popular devotion offers praise to the Blessed Mother through various expressions—joy, delight, and celebration—linked to the birth of her Son. This is especially evident in prayers that begin with:
“Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners.”
In Western countries, January 1 also marks the beginning of the civil year. The faithful take part in New Year celebrations and exchange greetings with one another. In doing so, believers are ordinarily called to recognize the truth that the New Year is a gift from God, and that, while offering New Year wishes, the coming year should be entrusted to God’s sovereignty, because all times and seasons belong to Him (cf. Rev 1:8; 22:13).
On January 1, the faithful may pray to the Holy Spirit so that their thoughts and actions may be guided rightly throughout the entire year (129). Through these greetings, the hope for a peaceful New Year may also be shared. This hope is biblical, Christological, and closely connected with the mystery of Christ’s Incarnation. Throughout history, many people have upheld various concepts of “peace,” especially during times of violence and destructive wars.
The Holy Church also shares in humanity’s deep and unceasing longing for peace. Since 1967, January 1 has been observed as the World Day of Peace. Popular devotion cannot ignore this initiative undertaken by the Church. In the light of the birth of the Prince of Peace, this day is set aside for prayers for peace, for education toward peace, and for the promotion of values such as freedom, solidarity as a shared heritage, human dignity, love for creation, the right to work, the sanctity of human life, and the elimination of injustices that confuse human conscience and pose a threat to peace.
