Saint Leander was born into a noble family in Cartagena, Spain. He was the eldest of five children in that household. From a very young age, Saint Leander embraced monastic life. Having spent many years in the monastery, he attained a high degree of learning and profound scholarship in holy writings. These qualities led Saint Leander to the head of the Church in Seville, yet this change in his life did not alter his personal lifestyle. His love for solitude continued to grow. At that time, Spain was under the rule of the Visigoths, who were not Catholics, and wherever they went, they spread their own religious practices.

Saint Leander became bishop during a period when this non-Catholic tradition had existed in Spain for over a hundred years, which caused him great sorrow. Nevertheless, through his prayers and tireless efforts, he was able to lead the nation towards Catholicism and become a key instrument in its propagation.

Because he converted Hermenegild, the eldest son of King Liuvigild, to the Catholic faith, the king banished Saint Leander from the country. The following year, when the king realized that divine grace had not favored his son or the bishopric, he executed his eldest son. Later, however, the remorseful king fell ill, and when all hope for recovery was gone, he called Saint Leander back, entrusting him with the task of guiding his son in the Christian faith.

Soon, this son also became a Catholic, and eventually the entire Visigothic kingdom embraced Catholicism. Saint Leander was equally zealous in both promoting religious renewal and fostering holiness. From the seeds of encouragement and zeal he sowed, many martyrs and saints arose in later times.

According to the inscription on his tomb, this divine man of Spain died on February 27, 596. From the third century onwards, the Christian Church in Seville had been very strong. In terms of construction and decoration, the cathedral there stands as the most magnificent and grand among Spanish churches.
