The authority of Saint Peter as the first leader and chief teacher of the Church has been recognized in the Roman Church since ancient times. Because he bore witness as the most renowned apostolic Church Father, the Roman Catholic Church has held a special place and obedience among the faithful. His loving actions and the services he carried out within the Church are the main reasons for this.

It can be seen in the Gospels that Christ desired unity in His Church. To that end, He called twelve disciples from among all His followers. However, for the fulfillment of the mystery of the Church’s unity, it is evident that Jesus chose one from among these twelve. Jesus gathered all His followers, preached the Gospel to them, and then selected twelve from among them—this is how the apostles were chosen, marking the first division carried out by Jesus.

Among these twelve apostles, the first was Simon called Peter (Matthew 10:1-2). As preparation for building His Church, Jesus chose Peter and gave Simon the name Peter, as recorded by the apostle Saint Mark.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19) is what Jesus Christ said from the beginning and continues to say to countless people. Yet, at the time of revealing the mystery of unity, as He extended His final hand to the cross, Jesus did not speak to everyone; instead, He specifically marked and entrusted Peter with this responsibility by the name He had given him.

The Son of God, Jesus Christ, addressed Simon son of Jonah; the powerful and true Jesus declared that henceforth He would speak and act through the rock-like Simon, and His own steadfastness was sealed upon him. Jesus said,
“You are Peter,” and added,
“Upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Knowing that faith is the foundation of His Church, Jesus prepared Peter for this mission, inspiring him with a faith strong enough to make him the cornerstone of the worshipful Church. Peter, by boldly declaring,
“You are the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:18), became qualified to be the cornerstone of the Church through this pledge of faith.

Choosing one person as the head was one of Jesus’ most profound designs. Yet, this succession never causes the first to lose his place. Whatever is done without repentance against Jesus’ promises or His gifts brings consequences. Moreover, when authority is conferred solely on one person, it is not divided with others, remains fruitful, and grants boundless protection to those under it.
