മധ്യകാലഘട്ടങ്ങളിലെ സഭയുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നവോത്ഥാനകരില് ഒരാളായാണ് വിശുദ്ധ പീറ്റര് ഡാമിയനെ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. എല്ലാക്കാലത്തേയും അസാധാരണ വ്യക്തിത്വങ്ങളില് ഒരാളായിരിന്നു വിശുദ്ധനെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ പറ്റി വിചിന്തനം ചെയ്യുമ്പോള് നമ്മുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കാന് സാധിയ്ക്കും. വിശുദ്ധ ഡാമിയനെന്ന പണ്ഡിതനില് അറിവിന്റെ ധനത്തേയും അപ്പസ്തോലിക ആവേശത്തേയും, ഡാമിയനെന്ന സന്യാസിയില് കഠിനമായ അച്ചടക്കവും പരിത്യാഗവും, ഡാമിയനെന്ന പുരോഹിതനില് ഭക്തിയും ആത്മാക്കള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള അടങ്ങാത്ത ആവേശവും കാണാന് സാധിയ്ക്കും. കൂടാതെ ഡാമിയന് കര്ദ്ദിനാളായിരിന്ന കാലഘട്ടത്തില് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വിശ്വസ്ഥതയും, പരിശുദ്ധ സഭയോടുള്ള വിധേയത്വവും ആളുകള്ക്ക് ദര്ശിക്കുവാന് കഴിയുമായിരിന്നുവെന്ന് ചരിത്രകാരന്മാര് പറയുന്നു. ഗ്രിഗറി ഏഴാമന്റെ ഒരു നല്ല സുഹൃത്തായിരുന്നു അദ്ദേഹം.
ഒരവസരത്തില് വിശുദ്ധന് തന്റെ അനന്തരവന് ഇപ്രകാരം എഴുതുകയുണ്ടായി, “ദിനംതോറും രക്ഷനായ യേശുവിന്റെ മാംസവും, അപ്പവും ഭക്ഷിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് തന്നെ തന്നെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നത് ഒരിക്കലും അവസാനിപ്പിക്കരുത്. നിന്റെ പരിധിയില് അലറികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന മൃഗീയ സ്വഭാവമുള്ള മനുഷ്യരെ പുറത്താക്കുക; നിന്റെ മറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന രഹസ്യ ശത്രു നിന്റെ അധരങ്ങള് യേശുവിന്റെ രക്തത്താല് ചുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നത് കാണട്ടെ. അവന് ഭയന്ന് വിറക്കും, ഭയം കൊണ്ട് കുനിഞ്ഞ്, അവന്റെ ഇരുളിലേക്ക് നാണംകെട്ട് പലായനം ചെയ്യുന്നത് നിനക്ക് കാണാന് സാധിയ്ക്കും.”
മഹാ കവിയായിരുന്ന ‘ഡാന്റെ’ തന്റെ ‘ഡിവൈന് കോമഡി’ എന്ന കവിതയില് “ദൈവത്തെ കുറിച്ച് പറയുകയും, ധ്യാനിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന വിശുദ്ധ മനുഷ്യര്ക്കായി ദൈവം കരുതിവെച്ചിട്ടുള്ള സ്ഥലമായ ‘ഏഴാം സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലാണ്’ വിശുദ്ധനെ അവരോധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്”. 1072-ല് വിശുദ്ധന് 65 വയസ്സുള്ളപ്പോളാണ് അദ്ദേഹം മരണമടഞ്ഞത്.
Saint Peter Damian is considered one of the greatest reformers of the Church during the medieval period. Reflecting on his life, one can understand why he is regarded as one of the most extraordinary personalities of all time. In Peter Damian the scholar, we see the wealth of knowledge and apostolic zeal; in Damian the monk, we see strict discipline and renunciation; and in Damian the priest, we see devotion and tireless enthusiasm for the souls entrusted to him. Moreover, historians note that during the period when Damian was a cardinal, his integrity and obedience to the Holy Church were evident to all. He was also a close friend of Pope Gregory VII.
On one occasion, Saint Damian wrote to his successor:
“Never cease to preserve yourself, even while daily consuming the flesh and blood of our Savior Jesus. Drive away the men of bestial nature who stir within your reach; let your hidden secret enemy see your lips stained with the blood of Jesus. You will witness him trembling with fear, bowing down in terror, and fleeing ashamed into the darkness of his soul.”
The great poet Dante, in his Divine Comedy, placed Damian in the Eighth Heaven, which he describes as the place God prepared for holy men who dedicate themselves to speaking of and contemplating God.
Saint Peter Damian died in 1072 at the age of 65.
