Saint Eliutherius was born in Tournai, France. He was among the early saints, and his parents were converted to Christianity from paganism. In 486, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Tournai. Through his preaching, pagan priests and non-believers in France were converted to Christianity.

Once, a young girl became attached to the saint, though the bishop himself had no involvement in the matter. When he learned this, the girl fell ill and soon lost consciousness. Saint Eliutherius assured her father that if he promised to embrace Christianity, he could cure her illness. Although the girl recovered, her father was unwilling to keep his word. As a result, Saint Eliutherius is said to have caused a plague in the region, through which the man repented and came to believe in Christ.

The saint eventually died from the wounds inflicted by non-believers in the area. He passed away on July 1, 532. Most of the historical records and relics related to him were destroyed in a great fire in 1092. The sermons attributed to Saint Eliutherius, which mention the incarnation of Christ, His birth, and the Annunciation, do not have reliable authenticity (sources: Benedictines, Bentley, Encyclopedia, Husenbeth).

In artistic depictions, Saint Eliutherius is often shown holding the vessel of the Eucharist during worship, or holding it among wounded soldiers and the poor. In some depictions, he is rescued by an angel from a pyre or fire. These images represent the saint’s holiness and divine favor.
