February 16:

The oldest historical record about the saint is found in the “Martyrologium Hieronymianum.” In this account, the saint’s birthplace is mentioned as Cumae in Campania. References to the same location can also be found in the writings of Saint Gregory. It is attested that Saint Juliana was especially venerated in Naples and the surrounding regions.

A woman named Gianuaria constructed a church on her land, and for its consecration, she wished to bring the relics of Sister Severina and Saint Juliana there. Upon learning this, Saint Gregory wrote to Fortunatus, the bishop of Naples, requesting that Gianuaria’s wish be granted if possible. Both the Latin and Greek Churches have included this saint in their lists of recognized saints.

The martyr Bede describes Saint Juliana’s deeds in his martyrology, relying entirely on tradition. According to his account, Saint Juliana lived in Nicomedia. She was betrothed to a senator named Alyusius, and her father, Africanus, was a pagan who opposed Christians.

During the persecution under Emperor Maximian, after enduring many torments, Saint Juliana was ultimately beheaded. Subsequently, a queen named Sephonia traveled via Nicomedia and transported the saint’s body to Italy, where it was entombed in Cumae. Over time, devotion to the martyr Juliana as Saint Juliana of Cumae spread widely. The saint holds particular importance in the Netherlands.

At the beginning of the 13th century, her relics were transferred to Naples. In the Latin Church, her feast is celebrated on February 16, while in the Greek Church, it is observed on December 21. Descriptions of her deeds also recount her struggles against Satan. Most artists depict Saint Juliana as controlling a winged demon bound with chains.
