Saints Faustinus and Jovitus were brothers from a noble family. They were also exceptionally knowledgeable about the Christian faith. During the persecution under Emperor Adrian, they fearlessly preached Christianity in the town of Brescia in Lombardy. Their zeal for Christianity provoked the hostility of both pagans and idol-worshippers.
Faustinus served as a priest, and Jovitus as a deacon. With courage, they traveled through nearby regions spreading their faith. When the zealous idol-worshipper and authority figure Julian learned of this, he had them arrested and demanded that they worship the sun. However, the saints boldly declared that they believed in the living God, the Creator of the sun, who reigns in heaven.
Before them stood a beautiful idol, surrounded by rays of golden light. Looking at the idol, Saint Jovitus boldly said:
“We believe in the Creator of the sun and the God who is enthroned in heaven. Let this idol, placed before those who worship it, become black in shame and disgrace!”
No sooner had he spoken than the idol turned black. The emperor then ordered that it be rubbed and cleaned, but the priest only touched it, and it collapsed to the ground in ashes.
The two brothers were then taken to an amphitheater surrounded by walls and equipped with seats, where they were to be thrown to starved lions. They were locked in a dark chamber without food. However, angels bestowed upon them strength, energy, and joy for the new trials. As a result, the lions treated them with respect. Many who witnessed this were converted to Christianity.
Finally, with no other recourse, the emperor ordered their beheading. They knelt on the ground, bowed their heads, and offered their lives as martyrs for the faith.
The city of Brescia has honored these saints as their intercessors and preserves their relics. Moreover, an ancient church dedicated to them still stands in the city.
