തന്റെ സഹോദരനായ നര്സിയായിലെ വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ടിനെ പോലെ യുവത്വത്തിന്റെ ആദ്യകാലങ്ങളില് തന്നെ തന്റെ ജീവിതം ദൈവത്തിനായി സമര്പ്പിച്ച ഒരു വിശുദ്ധയായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധ സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്ക. കന്യകയായിരുന്ന സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്കയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള വിവരങ്ങള് വളരെ പരിമിതമാണ്. ദൈവത്തോടുള്ള സംവാദങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള തന്റെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ ഗ്രന്ഥത്തില് (Book of Dialogues – Ch. 33 & 34) വിശുദ്ധ ഗ്രിഗറി മാര്പാപ്പാ വിശുദ്ധരായ ഈ സഹോദരീ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ അവസാന കൂടികാഴ്ചയെക്കുറിച്ച് നമുക്കായി വിവരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്: “അവന്റെ സഹോദരിയും ചെറുപ്പത്തില് തന്നെ ദൈവത്തിനായി സമര്പ്പിക്കപ്പെട്ടവളുമായ സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്ക, വര്ഷത്തിലൊരിക്കല് അവനെ സന്ദര്ശിക്കാറുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. ഈ അവസരങ്ങളില് അവന് അവളെ കാണുന്നതിനായി ആശ്രമത്തിന്റെ ഉടമസ്ഥതയിലുള്ളതും ആശ്രമത്തിന്റെ പ്രവേശന കവാടത്തില് നിന്നും കുറച്ചകലെയുള്ള ഒരു ഭവനത്തില് പോകുമായിരുന്നു. ഈ സന്ദര്ശനത്തിലും അവന് തന്റെ കുറച്ച് ശിക്ഷ്യന്മാരുമായി അവളെ കാണുവാനായി പോയി. പകല് മുഴുവന് അവര് അവിടെ ഗാനങ്ങളും, ദൈവ സ്തുതികളും, ആത്മീയ ജീവിതത്തെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ചര്ച്ചകളുമായി ചിലവഴിച്ചു.
“ഇരുട്ടായി തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള് അവര് ഒരുമിച്ചു ഭക്ഷണം കഴിച്ചു. പിന്നീട് ഒരുപാട് വൈകുംവരെ അവരുടെ സംഭാഷണം തുടര്ന്നു. അതിനുശേഷം വിശുദ്ധയായ ആ കന്യകാ സ്ത്രീ തന്റെ സഹോദരനോടു പറഞ്ഞു “ഈ രാത്രിയില് ദയവായി എന്നെ ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് പോകരുത് സഹോദരാ, നമുക്ക് നേരം വെളുക്കും വരെ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗത്തിലെ ആനന്ദത്തെ കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കാം.” ‘നീ എന്താണ് പറയുന്നത് സഹോദരീ’ അദ്ദേഹം പ്രതിവചിച്ചു. ‘നിനക്കറിയാമോ എനിക്ക് ആശ്രമത്തില് നിന്നും അധികനേരം മാറി നില്ക്കുവാന് കഴിയുകയില്ല.’ ആ സമയം ആകാശം വളരെ തെളിഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു. ഒരു കാര്മേഘം പോലും കാണുവാന് കഴിയുകയില്ലായിരുന്നു.
തന്റെ സഹോദരന്റെ നിഷേധാത്മകമായ മറുപടി കേട്ട സഹോദരി തന്റെ കൈകള് മടക്കി മേശയില് വെച്ച് അതിന്മേല് തന്റെ തലവച്ച് കുനിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു തീക്ഷണമായി പ്രാര്ത്ഥിക്കുവാനാരംഭിച്ചു. അവള് പിന്നീട് തല ഉയര്ത്തി നോക്കിയപ്പോള് പെട്ടെന്ന് തന്നെ ശക്തമായ മിന്നലും അതേ തുടര്ന്ന് ശക്തമായ ഇടിമുഴക്കവും ഉണ്ടായി. വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ടിനും ശിഷ്യന്മാര്ക്കും വാതിലിനു പുറത്തേക്ക് ഒരടിപോലും വെക്കുവാന് കഴിയാത്തത്ര ശക്തമായിരുന്നു അത്. തന്റെ പ്രാര്ത്ഥനക്കിടക്ക് ധാരധാരയായി കണ്ണുനീര് ഒഴിക്കികൊണ്ട് ആ വിശുദ്ധയായ കന്യകാസ്ത്രീ തെളിഞ്ഞ ആകാശത്തില് നിന്നും ശക്തിയായി മഴപെയ്യിച്ചു.
അവളുടെ പ്രാര്ത്ഥന അവസാനിച്ച ഉടനെ ശക്തമായ കൊടുങ്കാറ്റും വീശുവാനാരംഭിച്ചു. വാസ്തവത്തില് ഇവ രണ്ടും തികച്ചും ഒരേപോലെയായിരുന്നു, കാരണം അവള് മേശയില് നിന്നും തല ഉയര്ത്തിയപ്പോള് ഇതിനോടകം തന്നെ പുറത്ത് ഇടിമുഴങ്ങുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു, അവള് പ്രാര്ത്ഥന അവസാനിപ്പിച്ചപ്പോള് മഴയും ആരംഭിച്ചു. “തനിക്ക് ഈ സാഹചര്യത്തില് ആശ്രമത്തിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങുവാന് കഴിയുകയില്ല എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ട് വളരെ പരുഷമായി അവളോടു പരാതി പറഞ്ഞു ‘ദൈവം നിന്നോടു ക്ഷമിക്കട്ടെ സഹോദരീ. നീ എന്താണീ ചെയ്തത്?” ഇത് കേട്ട വിശുദ്ധ സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്ക ഇപ്രകാരം മറുപടി പറഞ്ഞു “ഞാന് നിന്നോടു ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള് നീ അത് ശ്രവിച്ചില്ല, അതിനാല് ഞാന് ദൈവത്തിങ്കലേക്ക് തിരിയുകയും അവന് എന്റെ പ്രാര്ത്ഥന കേള്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. ഇപ്പോള് നിനക്ക് സാധിക്കുമെങ്കില്, എന്നെ ഇവിടെ വിട്ടിട്ട് നിന്റെ ആശ്രമത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ പോയ്ക്കോളൂ.”
അത് തീര്ച്ചയായും അവന് സാധിക്കുകയില്ലായിരുന്നു. അവന് തന്റെ താല്പ്പര്യത്തിനു വിപരീതമായി അവിടെ തുടരുകയല്ലാതെ വേറെ വഴിയില്ലായിരുന്നു. രാത്രി മുഴുവന് അവര് വിശുദ്ധ ചിന്തകളും, ആന്തരിക ജീവിത ചിന്തകളും പരസ്പരം പങ്കുവെച്ചു. അടുത്ത ദിവസം രാവിലെ വിശുദ്ധ സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്ക തന്റെ മഠത്തിലേക്കും, വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ട് തന്റെ ആശ്രമത്തിലേക്കും തിരികെ പോയി.
മൂന്ന് ദിവസങ്ങള്ക്ക് ശേഷം വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ട് തന്റെ മുറിയില് ആകാശത്തേക്ക് നോക്കി കൊണ്ട് നില്ക്കുമ്പോള് തന്റെ സഹോദരിയുടെ ആത്മാവ് തന്റെ ശരീരം ഉപേക്ഷിച്ച് ഒരു പ്രാവിന്റെ രൂപത്തില് സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയ രാജധാനിയിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നതായി കണ്ടു. അവളുടെ നിത്യമഹത്വത്തില് ആനന്ദഭരിതനായ സഹോദരന് ഗാനങ്ങളും സ്തുതികളുമായി ദൈവത്തിനു നന്ദി പറഞ്ഞു. തന്റെ സഹോദരിയുടെ മരണത്തെ കുറിച്ച് തന്റെ ശിഷ്യന്മാരെ അറിയിച്ചതിനു ശേഷം വിശുദ്ധ ബെനഡിക്ട് താന് അവള്ക്കായി ഒരുക്കിയ കല്ലറയില് അടക്കുവാനായി അവളുടെ മൃതദേഹം കൊണ്ട് വരുവാനായി അവരില് കുറച്ച് പേരെ അയച്ചു.
ജീവിതകാലത്ത് തങ്ങളുടെ ആത്മാക്കള് ദൈവത്തില് ഒന്നായിരുന്നത് പോലെ ഈ വിശുദ്ധരായ സഹോദരീ-സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ മൃതദേഹങ്ങള് ഇപ്പോള് ഒരേ കല്ലറയിലാണ് അടക്കം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. മോണ്ടെ കാസ്സിനോയിലാണ് വിശുദ്ധ സ്കൊളാസ്റ്റിക്കയുടെ കബറിടം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നത്.
Saint Scholastica, like her brother Saint Benedict, dedicated her life to God from her early youth. Very little is known about the virgin Scholastica. In his second book, Book of Dialogues (Chapters 33 & 34), Pope Saint Gregory provides an account of the last meeting between these holy siblings:
“His sister, Scholastica, who had dedicated herself to God from her youth, would visit him once a year. On these occasions, he would go to a house near the monastery gate, owned by the monastery, to see her. He would come with a few of his disciples to meet her. They spent the entire day together singing, praising God, and discussing spiritual life.
“When night fell, they ate together, and their conversation continued late into the night. Then the holy virgin said to her brother, ‘Do not leave me this night, brother; let us continue to talk about the joys of heaven until daybreak.’ ‘What do you say, sister?’ he replied. ‘You know that I cannot remain away from the monastery for long.’ At that moment, the sky was clear, without a single cloud.
“Upon hearing his refusal, the sister folded her hands on the table, bowed her head, and began to pray intensely. When she looked up, suddenly there was a strong lightning flash, followed by a violent thunderstorm. The storm was so intense that Saint Benedict and his disciples could not step outside. During her prayer, the holy virgin wept profusely, and rain poured down powerfully from the bright sky.
“As soon as her prayer ended, a fierce wind began to blow. The two phenomena—lightning and rain—occurred simultaneously, because when she raised her head from the table, the storm had already begun outside; when she finished praying, the rain started. Saint Benedict, realizing he could not return to the monastery in this situation, complained harshly: ‘God forgive you, sister; what have you done?’ Scholastica replied, ‘I asked you, and you would not listen, so I turned to God, and He heard my prayer. Now, if you can, leave me here and return to your monastery.’
“He could not do so. He had no choice but to remain there against his own will. Throughout the night, they shared reflections on holy thoughts and the spiritual life. The next morning, Scholastica returned to her convent, and Benedict went back to his monastery.
“Three days later, Saint Benedict, looking toward heaven from his room, saw his sister’s soul leave her body and ascend to the heavenly city in the form of a shining dove. Filled with joy, he praised God with songs and hymns. After informing his disciples about her passing, he sent some of them to bring her body to the tomb he had prepared for her.”
The bodies of these holy siblings, united in life by their devotion to God, now rest together in a single tomb. Saint Scholastica’s grave is located at Monte Cassino.
