According to historical records concerning the martyrs, Saint Apollonia, a virgin, lived in Alexandria during the reign of Emperor Decius (249–251). Because of her profound faith in Christ, persecutors brutally tortured her, breaking her teeth and inflicting cruel sufferings. They also threatened that, if she did not blaspheme God, she would be thrown alive onto a pyre lined with sharpened swords. After a brief moment of reflection, Saint Apollonia voluntarily leapt onto the flaming pyre rather than submitting to the oppressors.

The fire within her—the fire of the Holy Spirit—was sharper than the flames outside. Witnessing a frail woman willingly throw herself into the fire, the persecutors were astonished. To this day, people all over the world seek Saint Apollonia’s intercession for relief from toothaches.

Saint Apollonia’s martyrdom might seem like an act of suicide. However, many understand her death as a courageous acceptance of suffering rather than an evasion of persecution or humiliation, demonstrating the strength of her faith in Christ. Nevertheless, moral-theological authorities, including Saint Augustine, have affirmed that suicide is never permissible under any circumstances. Saint Apollonia’s heroic act is therefore honored as an extraordinary act of faith, but it is not a model for imitation.

The primary historical account of Saint Apollonia was written by Dionysius, her contemporary and the Bishop of Alexandria.
