In the city of Venice, Saint Jerome Emiliani was a soldier who had grown up without responsibility or fear of God. During a small battle near a city fortress, the enemy captured him with chains and imprisoned him in a dungeon. While in captivity, Saint Jerome had ample time to reflect on his past life. It was there that he carefully learned how to pray. After being released from prison, he returned to Venice, took responsibility for the education of his followers, and began his studies for the priesthood.
Years after receiving the priesthood, circumstances and events prompted him to make a new decision and embrace a new way of life. At that time, northern Italy was suffering from plague and famine. Saint Jerome personally tended to the sick and provided food for the poor. He gave all of his possessions to the needy and decided to dedicate the remainder of his life to serving orphaned children. He established three orphanages and created a refuge for mentally troubled women. Additionally, he built a hospital. Around 1532, Saint Jerome, along with two other priests, founded a religious congregation dedicated to caring for orphans and educating young people.
While caring for the sick, Saint Jerome Emiliani himself fell ill and passed away in 1537. He was canonized in 1767, and in 1928, Pope Pius XI declared him the universal patron of abandoned and orphaned children.
