John de Britto was born into a wealthy family in Portugal. As a child, he spent some time in the palace of King Dom Pedro II. His devout life was not appreciated by his companions, so he had to endure some difficulties during his childhood. At that time, he suffered from a severe illness and was healed through the intercession of Saint Francis Xavier. From then on, John’s desire was to imitate Saint Francis Xavier, and this aspiration remained steadfast throughout his life.

On December 18, 1662, John entered the novitiate of the Jesuit order in Lisbon. Eleven years later, despite the opposition of his parents and the royal palace, he decided to go to India for missionary work. His mother was distressed upon hearing this. She pleaded with the papal nuncio to prevent John from leaving Portugal. He replied, “The God who has called me from the world into the religious life now calls me to India. If I do not respond to God’s call, I would oppose divine justice. For as long as I live, I will strive to go to India.”

For fourteen years, he preached the Gospel in places like Thanjavur, Madurai, and Rameswaram. He lived like a Brahmin and often ate with the poor in order to win over high-caste Hindus. Due to the success of his missionary work, an enraged king exiled him. Father John, though forced to return to Portugal, soon returned to his beloved mission field. Like Saint John the Baptist, he suffered due to the anger of a woman. A mentally disturbed Hindu king executed her, and during his painful imprisonment, John de Britto was eventually beheaded. He was canonized on June 22, 1947.
