February 03:

Saint Blaise was a healer and bishop in Sebaste, Armenia. He lived in a cave on Mount Argeus. He provided healing to both humans and animals alike. According to tradition, wild animals suffering from illnesses would come to him on their own, but while he was in prayer, none of the animals would disturb him. It was during this time that Agricola, the governor of Cappadocia, arrived in Sebaste to persecute Christians. His hunters entered the forest on Mount Argeus to hunt the animals, not just for hunting but also as a form of amusement.

Upon seeing the many wild animals in front of Saint Blaise’s cave, they entered and found the saint in prayer. They captured him and brought him before the governor. Agricola tried to persuade him to abandon the Christian faith, but he failed. Subsequently, while imprisoned, Saint Blaise provided healing from various illnesses to his fellow prisoners. This included saving a child who was choking because a fish bone was stuck in his throat. This event is the reason for the custom of blessing throats with candles on Saint Blaise’s feast day.

Although they threw him into a lake to drown him, he miraculously stood above the water, walking on its surface, demonstrating the power of God to those who were hunting him. Those who attempted to imitate him fell into the water. When he reached the shore, they captured and tortured him. Enduring cruel beatings, Saint Blaise attained martyrdom. His flesh was torn with iron combs, and finally, his head was cut off. This is why he is regarded as the patron saint of those involved in industries using combs made from animal hair.

For centuries, Saint Blaise has been venerated in both the Western and Eastern Churches. In 1222, the Oxford Council prohibited servile labor on his feast day. His intercession is sought for all kinds of throat illnesses. Additionally, on Saint Blaise’s feast day, two candles are blessed in prayer, and those who receive this blessing are granted healing from all illnesses, especially those related to the throat. Saint Blaise is also one of the 14 helper saints of the Church.
