Today (February 2), the Holy Church commemorates the Presentation of the Son of God in the Temple, forty days after His birth. Since the blessing of candles and a candlelight procession form part of the liturgy on this feast in certain rites, the day is also known as Candlemas.
According to the teaching of Pope Saint John XXIII on the Roman liturgical tradition, this feast is also referred to as the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Among many Christians, the custom of keeping Christmas decorations and the Nativity scene until this feast day still continues. The Presentation of the Divine Child in the Temple is considered the conclusion of the Christmas celebrations.
According to ancient custom, the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph present Jesus, the firstborn, in the Temple. In a sense, this feast is yet another Epiphany. Through the hymns of praise, the words of Simeon, and the testimony of the prophetess Anna, the Child Jesus is revealed as the Messiah. Christ is the Light of the world; therefore, the blessing of candles and the procession with light are integral to this feast. During the Middle Ages, the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Mother, or Candlemas, held great importance.
In obedience to the Law of Moses, Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary present Jesus in the Temple:
“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me; and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple” (Malachi 3:1).
The Gospels testify that Saint John the Baptist, born six months before Jesus, was sent by God to prepare the way for Him. From these Gospel realities, we can understand the words of the prophet Malachi. The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple signifies God Himself entering His Temple. God welcomes humanity into His dwelling and, in doing so, offers Himself to all who truly seek Him.
Today’s Gospel presents before us diverse people and events, offering countless lessons and themes for reflection. First, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, honoring the Law of Moses meant for the poor, offer a pair of doves as sacrifice.
Simeon and Anna were venerable elders who had devoted their lives to prayer and fasting. Their deep spiritual lives enabled them to recognize the Messiah. In this sense, the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple may be seen as closely connected to the Day of Prayer for Consecrated Life (Pro Orantibus). This day is celebrated in connection with the Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple (November 21). On this day, the Church expresses gratitude to those who have dedicated their lives to an intense life of prayer and contemplation in service of a special religious mission.
Through the figure of the righteous Simeon, the Feast of the Presentation reminds us that contemplation is not a waste of time, nor an obstacle to charity. There is no better use of time than prayer. Authentic Christian charity is the fruit of a profound interior life. Those who pray and do penance, like Simeon and Anna, are capable of living in the Spirit. They know how to recognize the Son of God when He reveals Himself, because they possess deep inner vision. Moreover, they have learned how to love with compassionate hearts.
At the end of the Gospel, Simeon’s prophecy concerning the suffering of the Blessed Mother is highlighted. According to the teaching of Pope Saint John Paul II, Simeon’s words constitute a second annunciation to Mary: they reveal to her the historical circumstances of misunderstanding and sorrow through which her Son would accomplish His mission (Redemptoris Mater, n.16).
The annunciation delivered by the angel Gabriel was a message of joy, revealing Christ’s salvific kingship and the miraculous nature of His birth through the Virgin’s conception.
However, the revelation given by the elders in the Temple unveils the redemptive work of the Lord through suffering, in which He would be supported by His Mother. Therefore, this feast also has a strong Marian dimension. In the liturgical calendar, it is described as the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It also recalls the ritual purification of Jewish women after childbirth. In Mary’s case, such purification was not necessary; rather, it signifies her self-renewal and complete self-offering for the fulfillment of God’s divine plan.
Simeon’s prophecy reveals that Jesus would be a “sign of contradiction.” Saint Cyril of Alexandria interprets this phrase as referring to the glorious Cross. As Saint Paul wrote to the Corinthians, Christ is “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles” (1 Corinthians 1:23). The Cross appears as foolishness to those who reject it, but to those who accept its power, it reveals life and salvation—thus truly becoming a sign of contradiction.
Therefore, today we too are invited to reflect:
Are we among those who embrace the Cross and gain life, or are we among those who reject the Cross and run after worldly desires, becoming mere fools?
