ഏതാണ്ട് 450-ല് ഒരു ഡ്രൂയിഡ് വിശ്വാസികളുടെ കുടുംബത്തിലാണ് കില്ദാരെയിലെ ബ്രിജിത്ത ജനിച്ചത്. ലിയോഘൈര് രാജാവിന്റെ രാജധാനിയിലെ ഒരു കവിയായിരുന്നു വിശുദ്ധയുടെ പിതാവ്. തന്റെ ചെറുപ്രായത്തില് തന്നെ ബ്രിജിത്ത ഒരു സന്യസ്ഥയാകണമെന്ന് ഏറെ ആഗ്രഹിച്ചിരിന്നു. കാലക്രമേണ അവള് സന്യാസവൃതം സ്വീകരിച്ചു. മറ്റുള്ള ഒരുകൂട്ടം സ്ത്രീകളുമായി അവള് കില്ദാരേയില് ഒരു കന്യാസ്ത്രീ മഠം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു. പിന്നീടവള് കോണ്ലേഡ് നയിച്ചിരുന്ന ഒരു സന്യാസിനീ സമൂഹത്തില് ചേര്ന്നു.
പുരാതന കാലത്ത് കില്ദാരേയില് വിജാതീയരുടെ ഒരമ്പലമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവിടെ നിരന്തരം കത്തികൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അഗ്നികുണ്ടവും. വിശുദ്ധ ബ്രിജെറ്റും അവളുടെ സന്യാസിനീമാരും ഈ അഗ്നികുണ്ഡം നശിപ്പിക്കാതെ അതൊരു ക്രിസ്ത്യന് അടയാളമായി സൂക്ഷിച്ചു വന്നു. (നിസ്സാരമായ ചെറുത്തുനില്പ്പുകളോടെ അയര്ലന്ഡിലെ ഡ്രൂയിഡിസം ക്രിസ്തുമത വിശ്വാസത്തിനു വഴിമാറികൊടുത്ത പൊതുപ്രക്രിയയോട് യോജിച്ചായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ദൈവപ്രകൃതത്തെ പറ്റിയുള്ള ഭാഗികവും, പരിക്ഷണാത്മകവുമായ ഉള്കാഴ്ചയാണ് തങ്ങളുടെ വിശ്വാസമെന്നാണ് ഭൂരിഭാഗം ഡ്രൂയിഡുകളും പറയുന്നത്. അവര് അന്വഷിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ആ ഉള്കാഴ്ച ക്രിസ്തുമതത്തിലാണ് അവര്ക്ക് കാണുവാന് കഴിഞ്ഞത്). ഒരു അശ്രമാധിപ എന്ന നിലയില് വിശുദ്ധ നിരവധി ഐറിഷ് സമിതികളില് പങ്കെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്, ഐറിഷ് സഭയുടെ നയങ്ങളില് വിശുദ്ധയുടെ സ്വാധീനം നിര്ണ്ണായകമായിരുന്നു.
Around 450 AD, Saint Brigid of Kildare was born into a family of Druid believers. Her father was a poet in the royal court of King Lóegaire. From a very young age, Brigid deeply desired to become a religious nun. In due course, she embraced the religious life. Along with a group of women, she founded a convent at Kildare. Later, she also joined a community of nuns led by Conlaed.
In ancient times, there existed a pagan temple at Kildare, where a perpetual sacred fire burned continuously. Saint Brigid and her community of nuns preserved this fire as a Christian symbol rather than extinguishing it. This practice was in harmony with the broader historical process in Ireland, where Druidism gradually gave way to Christianity with minimal resistance. Many Druids themselves acknowledged that their faith represented only a partial and experimental understanding of the divine, and they eventually discovered the fulfillment of that spiritual search within Christian faith.
As an abbess, Saint Brigid participated in numerous Irish synods, and her influence on the policies and direction of the Irish Church was both profound and decisive.
