In January 314, following the death of Pope Miltiades, Saint Sylvester, a native of Rome, was chosen to lead the Church. Saint Sylvester ascended to the papacy at a time when the Church had gained a temporary victory over those who had been persecuting her. He governed the Church for about twenty-one years. During his pontificate, he worked to restore discipline within the Church and took part in theological discussions against heresies. Although he did not personally attend the Council of Nicaea, he sent his representatives to that first Ecumenical Council.

It was during his papacy, under Emperor Constantine, that many famous churches were established in Rome. These included the Lateran Basilica and its baptistery, the basilica in the Sessorian Palace (Santa Croce in Gerusalemme), Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, and numerous cemetery churches built over the tombs of martyrs. It can be stated without doubt that Saint Sylvester assisted in the construction of these churches. He was a friend of Emperor Constantine.

In 325, he confirmed the First Council of Nicaea. This saint ushered in a new era of peace for the Church. After centuries of bloody persecution, he may rightly be called the “first Pope of peace.” He also founded the Roman school of sacred music. Over the tomb of Saint Priscilla, he built a cemetery church, and when he died on December 31, 335, Saint Sylvester was buried in this very church.

Many dramatic legends are associated with his life and works. Among them are stories that he cured Emperor Constantine of leprosy and that he slew a fearsome creature that emitted poisonous fumes when it breathed. Such legends are meant only to illustrate the power of Baptism and the triumph of Christianity over idol worship.
