It is believed that Saint Sabinus served as bishop in several cities of Italy. During the persecution under Emperor Diocletian, Saint Sabinus and many of his priests were imprisoned. Venustianus, the governor of Etruria, brought them before him and, placing an idol of Jupiter in the saint’s hands, demanded that he worship it. Saint Sabinus, however, contemptuously threw the idol to the ground and smashed it. Enraged by this, Venustianus ordered that both of the saint’s hands be cut off.
Two of the saint’s deacons, Marcellus and Exsuperantius, also held fast to their faith. Because of this, they were scourged and subjected to severe torture. As a result of these various sufferings, both of them soon died. Sabinus was thrown back into prison, and the bodies of Marcellus and Exsuperantius were buried at Assisi.
A widow named Serena brought her blind son to Saint Sabinus. Though the saint’s hands had been cut off, he blessed them, and as a result the widow’s son regained his sight. Witnessing this miracle, the saint’s fellow prisoners immediately received baptism. This event also led to the conversion of Governor Venustianus himself, who had been suffering from an illness of the eyes. It is said that he, his wife, and his children later gave their lives for Christ.
At Spoleto, Saint Sabinus was beaten to death and buried about a mile away from the place of his martyrdom. According to Saint Gregory the Great, a church was built near the city of Fermo in honor of Saint Sabinus, and the relics of the saint were requested for this church from Chrysanthus, who was then the bishop of Spoleto. Saint Sabinus was a man of profound learning and holiness; Saint Ambrose himself would give his writings to Saint Sabinus for review and correction before publishing them.
