Saint Thomas Becket was born in 1118 into a merchant family. After completing his education in London and Paris, he became a nobleman and Chancellor during the reign of King Henry II in 1155. Later, in 1162, he was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury. Until then, Thomas had been a highly obedient servant of the king; however, after becoming archbishop, he suddenly and fearlessly took a stand against the king in defense of the freedom of the Church and the inviolable observance of ecclesiastical laws. This bold stance led to his imprisonment and exile. He was canonized very soon after his death. In 1539, King Henry VIII ordered that his relics be burned.
Ancient Church records describe the saint’s final days as follows:
“Informers told the king that the archbishop was acting against him and disturbing the peace of the kingdom. Viewing this priest as an obstacle to his own peace, the king grew hostile toward him. Some godless royal servants, understanding the king’s displeasure, decided to do away with the saint. They secretly traveled to Canterbury and attacked the archbishop while he was participating in evening prayers.
The priests who were with the saint rushed to help him and closed the doors of the church. But Saint Thomas, without fear, ordered the doors to be opened wide, saying: ‘The house of God must not become like a fortress. I am ready to die joyfully for the Church of God.’ Then he said to the soldiers, ‘In the name of God, I command you—let no harm come to those who are with me.’
After this, while remaining on his knees, the saint entrusted himself and his people to God, to the Blessed Virgin Mary, to Saint Denis, and to the other holy intercessors of the Church, praising God. Then, with the same courage with which he had opposed the unjust laws of the king, he bowed his head to the swords of the blasphemers on December 20, 1170.
We must resist any power that seeks to bring the Church under its control, using all the strength God has given us—even if that power is one we are called to serve. By laying down his life for his flock, the Church honors and celebrates Saint Thomas of Canterbury, one of her most glorious bishops, as the ‘Good Shepherd of the Gospel.’
