സുവിശേഷത്തില് പറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നത് പോലെ ക്രൂരനായ ഹെറോദേസ് ചക്രവര്ത്തിയാല് കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ട പിഞ്ചു പൈതങ്ങളുടെ തിരുനാള് ഇന്ന് നാം ആഘോഷിക്കുകയാണ്. ഇന്നത്തെ തിരുനാള് കൊണ്ട് വെളിവാക്കപ്പെടുന്നത് എത്രമാത്രം ക്രൂരത ആ പൈതങ്ങളുടെ മേല് ചൊരിയപ്പെട്ടുവോ അതിനും മേലെ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയ അനുഗ്രഹങ്ങള് അവരില് വര്ഷിക്കപ്പെട്ടു എന്നുള്ളതാണ്. അതിനാല് ഭൂമി മുഴുവന് ആഹ്ലാദിക്കട്ടെ, ധാരാളം സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയ വിശുദ്ധര്ക്ക് ജന്മം നല്കുകയും, സകലവിധ നന്മയുംനിറഞ്ഞ തിരുസഭ ജയഭേരി മുഴക്കട്ടെ.
വിശുദ്ധ അഗസ്റ്റിൻ ഈ കുഞ്ഞി പൈതങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുന്നത് ഇപ്രകാരമാണ് “ജൂദായിലെ ബെത്ലഹെമേ നീ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടവളാകുന്നു! നിന്റെ സ്വന്തം പൈതങ്ങള് ക്രൂരമായി വധിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് മൂലം ക്രൂരനായ ഹെറോദിന്റെ മനുഷ്യത്വരഹിതമായ പ്രവര്ത്തികളാല് നീ ഏറെ സഹിക്കപ്പെട്ടവളാണ് എങ്കിലും ഇതിലൂടെ നിന്റെ വിശുദ്ധരായ പൈതങ്ങളെ അതിഥികളായി ദൈവത്തിനു നല്കിയതിനാല് നീ മഹത്വമേറിയവളായിരിക്കുന്നു. പരിപൂര്ണ്ണ അധികാരങ്ങളോടുകൂടി നാം ഈ പൈതങ്ങളുടെ സ്വര്ഗ്ഗീയ ജന്മദിനം നാം ആഘോഷിക്കുകയാണ്, കാരണം വര്ത്തമാന കാലത്തെ ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നതിനു മുന്പേ തന്നെ അനശ്വരമായ ആത്യന്തിക ജീവിതാനുഗ്രഹം നേടുവാന് അവര്ക്ക് സാധിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു.
തങ്ങളുടെ ധീരമായ പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങള് മൂലം ഓരോ രക്തസാക്ഷിയുടേയും അമൂല്യമായ മരണം പ്രശംസാര്ഹമാണ്, പക്ഷേ പെട്ടെന്ന് നേടിയ ദൈവീക വിശുദ്ധി മൂലം ദൈവത്തിന്റെ ദൃഷ്ടിയില് ഈ കുഞ്ഞു പൈതങ്ങളുടെ മരണവും അമൂല്യമാണ്. തങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തില് തന്നെ അവര് ഈ ലോകത്ത് നിന്നും കടന്നുപോയിരിക്കുന്നു. വര്ത്തമാനകാല ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ അവസാനം അവരെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം മഹത്വത്തിന്റെ തുടക്കമായിരുന്നു. അവരുടെ അമ്മയുടെ മടിയില് നിന്നും ഹേറോദിന്റെ ക്രൂരത അവരെ പിച്ചിചീന്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ആയതിനാല് ‘ശിശുക്കളായ രക്തസാക്ഷി പുഷ്പങ്ങള്’ എന്നവര് വാഴ്ത്തപ്പെടുന്നു. കൊടുംശൈത്യകാലത്ത് ക്രൂരമായി വധിക്കപ്പെട്ടത് മൂലം പക്വതയാര്ജ്ജിച്ച് തിരുസഭയില് ആദ്യം പുഷ്പിച്ച പുഷ്പങ്ങളായാണ് സഭ അവരെ കാണുന്നത്
As narrated in the Gospel, today we celebrate the feast of the infant children who were killed by the cruel Emperor Herod. What today’s feast reveals is that the heavenly blessings poured upon those infants were far greater than the cruelty inflicted upon them. Therefore, let the whole earth rejoice; let the Holy Church, rich in every kind of goodness, sound the trumpet of victory, for she has given birth to a great multitude of heavenly saints.
Saint Augustine speaks of these little children as follows:
“O Bethlehem of Judea, you are blessed! Though you suffered greatly because your own children were cruelly slain by the inhuman deeds of the cruel Herod, yet through this you have become glorious, because you offered your holy children to God as guests. With full authority we celebrate the heavenly birthday of these children, for even before they could enjoy this present life, they were able to obtain the immortal blessing of eternal life.
By their courageous deeds, the precious death of every martyr is worthy of praise; but by the sudden gift of divine holiness, even the death of these little children is precious in the sight of God. At the very beginning of their lives they departed from this world. For them, the end of temporal life became the beginning of glory. From their mothers’ laps, Herod’s cruelty tore them apart. Therefore, they are praised as ‘infant martyr flowers.’ Because they were cruelly slain in the bitter cold of winter, the Church regards them as the first flowers to bloom within her, having attained maturity through suffering.”
