Saint John the Apostle, the son of Zebedee and Salome, was one of the twelve disciples of Christ. In the very first year of His public ministry, Jesus called John to be an Apostle. It is generally believed that John the Evangelist and John of Patmos, the faithful disciple of Jesus, are one and the same person. Saint John’s elder brother, the great Saint James, was also one of the twelve Apostles. Jesus referred to these two brothers as “sons of thunder” (Boanerges).

Saint John is believed to have been the longest-living Apostle and the only Apostle who did not die a martyr’s death. Along with Saints Peter and James, Saint John alone witnessed the miracle in which Jesus raised the daughter of Jairus from the dead. Saint John was also the closest witness to Christ’s agony in Gethsemane.

It was Saint John alone who informed Jesus that they had tried to prevent someone who was not one of the disciples from casting out demons in Jesus’ name. On hearing this, Jesus said, “Whoever is not against us is for us.” It was Peter and John whom Christ entrusted with the task of preparing the Passover meal (the Last Supper). During the meal, Saint John sat very close to Christ, leaning toward Him rather than reclining back on his seat.

Among the twelve Apostles, Saint John alone did not abandon Christ during His Passion. It was to Saint John, who stood faithfully beneath the Cross, that Jesus entrusted His Mother. After the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John went to Ephesus. According to Church tradition, Roman authorities exiled the saint to the Greek island of Patmos. It was there that the saint wrote the Book of Revelation.

Toward the end of the first century, during the reign of Emperor Domitian, Saint John was thrown into boiling oil in Rome, but he emerged without suffering any burns. It is said that this was the reason for his exile to Patmos. It is also said that all who witnessed this miracle in the Colosseum converted to Christianity. Emperor Domitian was notorious for persecuting Christians. Saint John is best known as the author of the Gospel of John in the New Testament.

In addition to this, Saint John wrote four more books in the New Testament: three Epistles and one Book of Revelation. It is stated that the Gospel of John was written by “John, the beloved disciple of Jesus.” Moreover, John 21:24 indicates that the Gospel of John is based on the testimony of the beloved disciple. Nevertheless, debates regarding the actual authorship of these writings have existed since around the year 200.

In his Ecclesiastical History, Eusebius states that the first Epistle of John and the Gospel can be attributed to Saint John the Apostle himself. Eusebius further states that the second and third Epistles cannot be attributed to the Apostle John. In the Gospel of John, the expressions “the disciple whom Jesus loved” or “the beloved disciple” are used five times, whereas these expressions do not appear elsewhere in the New Testament in reference to Jesus’ disciples.

Saint John is also called the Apostle of Love. A virtue he learned from his Master, the saint expressed through both words and example. This beloved disciple of Christ died in AD 98 in Ephesus. A church was built over the place where he was buried, but it was later converted into a Muslim mosque.

Saint John is regarded as the patron saint of love, fidelity, friendship, and authors. In artwork, he is often depicted as an Evangelist standing beside an eagle, symbolizing the lofty nature of his Gospel. In other depictions, he is shown gazing toward heaven while proclaiming the Gospel to his disciples. According to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jesus promised immortality to Saint John, and they also state that in 1829, Saint John, along with Peter and James, appeared and restored the priesthood to the earth through apostolic succession (Doctrine and Covenants 27:12).
