സഭയിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ രക്തസാക്ഷിയാണ് വിശുദ്ധ എസ്തപ്പാനോസ്. വിശ്വാസികളുടെ പ്രത്യേക ആദരത്തിനു പാത്രമായിട്ടുള്ള വിശുദ്ധ എസ്തപ്പാനോസ് ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ മരണത്തിന് രണ്ടു വര്ഷങ്ങള്ക്ക ശേഷം കല്ലെറിഞ്ഞു കൊല്ലപ്പെടുകയാണ് ഉണ്ടായത്. അപ്പസ്തോലിക പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളിലെ സൂചനകള് പ്രകാരം വിശുദ്ധനെ പിടികൂടിയതും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനെതിരായ ആരോപണമുന്നയിക്കലും ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ വിചാരണയോട് സമാനമായിരുന്നെന്ന കാര്യം എടുത്ത് കാണിക്കുന്നു. നഗര മതിലിനു പുറത്തു വച്ച് വിശുദ്ധനെ കല്ലെറിയുകയും, തന്റെ ഗുരുവിനേപോലെ തന്റെ ശത്രുക്കള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് വിശുദ്ധന് മരണം വരിച്ചു.
അപ്പസ്തോലന്മാരെ സഹായിക്കുവാനും, അവരുടെ സുവിശേഷ പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങള് ലഘൂകരിക്കുവാനും വേണ്ടി മുന്നിട്ടിറങ്ങിയ ഏഴ് പേരില് ഒരാളാണ് വിശുദ്ധ എസ്തപ്പാനോസ്. അദ്ദേഹം വിശ്വാസത്താലും, പരിശുദ്ധാത്മാവിനാലും നിറഞ്ഞ പുണ്യാത്മാവായിരുന്നു. മഹത്വവും ശക്തിയും നിറഞ്ഞവന്. അപ്പസ്തോലിക തീക്ഷണതയാലും, ദൈവീക വരങ്ങളാലും അനുഗ്രഹിക്കപ്പെട്ട ദൈവീക മനുഷ്യനായി വിശുദ്ധന് വിളങ്ങുന്നു. ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ ആദ്യ സാക്ഷി എന്ന നിലയില് അദ്ദേഹം തന്റെ ശത്രുക്കളെ ധൈര്യപൂര്വ്വം നേരിടുകയും ക്രിസ്തുവിന്റെ വാഗ്ദാനം (Mark 13.11) നിറവേറപ്പെടുകയും ചെയ്തു. “എസ്തപ്പാനോസുമായുള്ള തര്ക്കത്തില് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ബുദ്ധിയേയും, ജ്ഞാനത്തേയും, അദേഹത്തിന്റെ വാക്കുകളിലെ ആത്മാവിനെയും പ്രതിരോധിക്കുവാന് അവര്ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.”
സ്വന്തം ജീവന് തന്നെ ത്യജിക്കുവാന് തയ്യാറാകും വിധം, ക്രിസ്തുവിനെപ്പോലെ തന്നെ തന്റെ കൊലയാളികള്ക്ക് വേണ്ടി പ്രാര്ത്ഥിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് ക്രിസ്തുവിനെ അനുകരിച്ചവന്, എന്നാണ് ആദ്യ രക്തസാക്ഷിയായ വിശുദ്ധ എസ്തപ്പാനോസിനെക്കുറിച്ച് ആരാധന ക്രമത്തില് പരാമര്ശിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത്. ക്രിസ്തുമസ്സിനു ശേഷം വരുന്ന ദിവസം വിശുദ്ധന്റെ നാമഹേതു തിരുനാളായി അംഗീകരിച്ചതിലൂടെ തിരുസഭ ഈ ശിക്ഷ്യനും ഗുരുവും തമ്മിലുള്ള സാദൃശ്യത്തെ എടുത്ത് കാണിക്കുകയും വീണ്ടെടുപ്പിന്റെ മിശിഖായായി സാക്ഷ്യപ്പെടുത്തുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു.
Saint Stephen is the first martyr of the Church. Saint Stephen, who is held in special veneration by the faithful, was stoned to death about two years after the death of Christ. According to indications found in the Acts of the Apostles, the manner in which Saint Stephen was arrested and the accusations brought against him closely resembled the trial of Christ Himself. He was stoned outside the city walls, and like his Master, he met death while praying for his enemies.
Saint Stephen was one among the seven men chosen to assist the Apostles and to ease their evangelizing mission. He was a holy man, full of faith and the Holy Spirit, filled with glory and power. He stands forth as a man of God blessed with apostolic zeal and divine gifts. As the first witness of Christ, he courageously confronted his enemies, and thus the promise of Christ (Mark 13:11) was fulfilled:
“They could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen spoke.”
In the liturgy, Saint Stephen, the first martyr, is described as one who imitated Christ by praying for his murderers, even to the point of offering up his own life. By celebrating the feast of this saint on the day immediately following Christmas, the Church highlights the similarity between the disciple and the Master and bears witness to Christ as the Messiah of redemption.
