(Joseph Ratzinger in God and the World: A Conversation with Peter Seewald, 2001, p. 197).
(P. Guéranger, L’Anno Liturgico, Alba 1959 [orig. franc. 1841], I, p122).
(cit. in Guéranger, pp 136-137).
(Vatican II, Lumen Gentium, n.8).
Today is a holy day in world history. It is the day on which the Word became flesh and God was born on earth as the Savior of humankind. Beyond all processes of evolution stands this supremely great event in which God truly became man: the union of God and humanity, of Creator and creation. It is not another stage of development according to evolutionary theory, but rather a powerful irruption of personality founded on love, opening up new dimensions and possibilities for humankind
(Joseph Ratzinger, God and the World: A Conversation with Peter Seewald, 2001, p. 197).
Christmas tells us this: by ourselves we can never bring about changes deep enough in our world to resolve the problem of original sin. On our own, we may be able to make our world better or worse, but we cannot save it. That is why Christ came. From the moment we became embryos in our mother’s wombs, we have been enveloped by the moral illness called “original sin,” from which we cannot free ourselves by our own power. The birth of Christ gives us hope—true Christian optimism: I cannot do this, but He is there to help me! This is the mystery contained in God’s incarnation as man.
The night and the day of Christmas are opportunities for contemplative reflection. As we meditate on the mysteries of the love that became incarnate for our sake, we can consider them from many perspectives. First, we may reflect on the light and joy of Christmas, but also on the sufferings and hardships faced by Jesus and the Blessed Mother: the bitter cold, the inadequate shelter, the dangers they encountered. It is good to keep these things in mind.
While reflecting on these, it is fitting to pray the Rosary near the manger:
“O blessed Grotto of Bethlehem, witness of wonders! Who, in this hour, would not have his heart transformed? Who would not desire the glorious heavenly kingdom of the universal King?”
(P. Guéranger, L’Anno Liturgico, Alba 1959 [orig. French 1841], I, p. 122).
In his book “Meditations on the Life of Jesus Christ,” the Doctor of the Church Saint Bonaventure, speaking of this same context, says:
“Remain there for a while, adore the Son of God on your knees, venerate His Mother, honor Saint Joseph, then kiss the feet of the Infant Jesus lying in the manger, and pray to the Blessed Mary for the grace to hold Jesus firmly in our lives at all times.
Take the Child Jesus into your hands and gaze upon His beautiful face. Reverently kiss that face and rejoice with Him.”
You are able to do this, because He came precisely to give Himself as food and to lead sinners to salvation
(cited in Guéranger, pp. 136–137).
Christmas also reminds us of the great mystery of the People of God, the Church, which is governed by shepherds in communion with the successor of Saint Peter, given life by the life-giving Holy Spirit, and purchased by the blood shed by Christ. How can we fail, on this day when the Word descended to earth taking on human nature, body, and soul, to reflect upon the Body of the Savior, made alive by the Holy Spirit?
For this very reason, the Church is compared, by analogy, to the mystery of the Incarnation of the Word. The natures united in Christ remain inseparably united to Him and serve the divine Word as the living and saving path. In a similar way, the Church, through its social structure, serves the Spirit of Christ, and Christ, seeing it as His own Body, animates it with His life
(Vatican II, Lumen Gentium, n. 8).
