John Cantius was born in 1397 in the town of Kęty (Canti) in Poland. In later years, he became a scholar in theology. After receiving priestly ordination, the saint went on to serve as a professor at the University of Kraków. Saint John also made pilgrimages barefoot to holy places such as Palestine and Rome.

One day, a group of thieves robbed him of everything he had. They then asked whether anything else remained with him. Upon hearing the saint reply, “No,” the thieves immediately left the place. Only after they had gone did the saint remember that he had a few pieces of gold sewn inside his garment. At once, the saint ran after the thieves, stopped them, and informed them about this. Astonished by his honesty, the thieves not only returned the gold but also gave back all the items they had stolen earlier.

To protect himself and those living in his house from the poison of evil, the saint had the following words written on the walls of his room:

that is:
“Take care not to cause disturbance, and avoid defaming others, for it is very difficult to undo a wrong once it has been done.”

The saint’s love for his neighbors deserves special mention. On many occasions, he gave his clothes and footwear to the poor, and to prevent others from seeing him standing barefoot, he would lower his cassock so that it dragged along the ground. When he realized that his end was near, the saint distributed everything that remained with him among the poor and joyfully departed into the presence of God. Saint John is one of the principal patrons of Poland.
