റോമില് മാക്സിമസിന്റെ മകനായാണ് അന്റാസിയൂസ് ഒന്നാമന് മാര്പാപ്പയുടെ ജനനം. അന്റാസിയൂസ് 399 നവംബര് 27ന് മാര്പാപ്പായായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു. ഏതാണ്ട് രണ്ടു വര്ഷത്തോളം അദ്ദേഹം പരിശുദ്ധ സഭയെ ഭരിച്ചു. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഭരണകാലം ഓര്മ്മയില് തങ്ങിനില്ക്കുന്നത് ഒരിജെന്റെ അബദ്ധ പ്രബോധനങ്ങള്ക്കെതിരായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ നടപടികള് മൂലമാണ്. ഒരിജെന്റെ പ്രബോധനങ്ങളില് ആകൃഷ്ടരായവര് മൂലം തിരുസഭക്ക് സംഭവിക്കാവുന്ന നാശങ്ങളില് നിന്നും സഭയെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കുന്നതിനായി അദ്ദേഹം ഒരിജെന് ആശയങ്ങള് തെറ്റാണെന്ന് പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചു. കൂടാതെ ആഫ്രിക്കയിലെ മെത്രാന്മാരോട് ഡോണോടിസത്തോടുള്ള തങ്ങളുടെ എതിര്പ്പ് തുടരുവാന് അഭ്യര്ത്ഥിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.
അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ വ്യക്തിപരമായ വിശുദ്ധിയും ഭക്തിയും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഇത്തരം പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളില് വളരെയേറെ സഹായകരമായിട്ടുണ്ട്. വിശുദ്ധ ജെറോമും തന്റെ സ്വന്തം രീതിയില് അന്റാസിയൂസിന്റെ പ്രവര്ത്തനങ്ങളെ തുണച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്, കൂടാതെ വിശുദ്ധ ആഗസ്റ്റിനെ, വിശുദ്ധ പോളിനാസ് തുടങ്ങിയവര് വിശുദ്ധിയുടെ മാതൃകയായി ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ വാഴ്ത്തി. അന്റാസിയൂസ് ഒന്നാമന് മാര്പാപ്പയാണ്, സുവിശേഷം വായിക്കുമ്പോള് നില്ക്കുവാനും തങ്ങളുടെ തലകുനിച്ച് വണങ്ങുവാനും പുരോഹിതന്മാര്ക്ക് നിര്ദേശം നല്കിയത്. 401-ല് വെച്ചു വിശുദ്ധന് മരണമടഞ്ഞു.
റോമിലെ രക്തസാക്ഷി സൂചികയില് ഇപ്രകാരം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു “കടുത്ത ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലും, അപ്പസ്തോലിക വിശുദ്ധിയിലും ജീവിച്ച അന്റാസിയൂസ് ഒന്നാമന് മാര്പാപ്പ റോമില് വച്ച് മരിച്ചു. റോം ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ കൂടുതലായി അര്ഹിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്നാണു വിശുദ്ധ ജെറോം രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയിട്ടുള്ളത്”.
Pope Anastasius I was born in Rome as the son of Maximus. Anastasius was elected Pope on November 27, 399, and he governed the Holy Church for about two years. His pontificate is especially remembered for his actions against the erroneous teachings of Origen. In order to protect the Church from the damage that could be caused by those who were attracted to Origen’s teachings, he officially declared Origen’s ideas to be false. He also urged the bishops of Africa to continue their opposition to Donatism.
His personal holiness and piety greatly supported him in carrying out these actions. Saint Jerome supported Anastasius’ efforts in his own way, and Saint Augustine, Saint Paulinus, and others praised him as a model of holiness. Pope Anastasius I was the one who instructed priests to stand while the Gospel is read and to bow their heads in reverence. The saint died in 401.
In the Roman Martyrology, the following is recorded:
“Pope Anastasius I, who lived in severe poverty and apostolic holiness, died in Rome. Saint Jerome wrote that Rome did not deserve him.”
