Saints Rufus and Zosimus were citizens of Antioch. During the reign of Emperor Trajan, they came to Rome together with Saint Ignatius of Antioch. Because of their Christian faith, they were condemned to death and were killed by being thrown to wild beasts in the Colosseum, two days before the martyrdom of Saint Ignatius.
In the first decade of the second century, Rufus and Zosimus, as companions of Saint Ignatius, stayed for a time at Smyrna in Asia Minor while traveling to Rome. At that time, Saint Polycarp was the bishop of Smyrna. He was a disciple of Saint John the Apostle. After leaving Smyrna, they continued their journey to Rome via Philippi in ancient Macedonia, as Saint Polycarp mentions in his apostolic letters to the Philippians.
According to the apostolic letters of Saint Polycarp and other ancient records, just as Saint Ignatius carried out his evangelical mission, the activities of these saints also contributed to the spread of the faith throughout Asia Minor. Even before their martyrdom, Saints Rufus and Zosimus were models for the early Christian communities. Therefore, they were honored as brave warriors of the faith.
Around the year 107, Saints Rufus and Zosimus were thrown to wild beasts in the Roman Colosseum before a large crowd, in the same manner in which Saint Ignatius himself was martyred.
