Saint Olympias was born into a wealthy noble family in Constantinople. She was orphaned at a very young age. Her uncle, who was a high official in Procopius, entrusted her care to Theodosia. Saint Olympias married Nebridios, a prominent official, but he died soon afterward, leaving her a widow. Having decided to dedicate her life to the service of God and works of charity, she rejected all subsequent marriage proposals.
After her husband’s death, all her lands were placed under the supervision of a magistrate; however, when she reached the age of thirty, Emperor Theodosius returned all her property to her. Soon afterward, she was ordained as a deaconess. Gathering several other women around her, the saint founded a convent.
Saint Olympias was deeply committed to charitable works and never turned away those who came to her seeking help. Even those who were undeserving frequently sought assistance from her. Therefore, when her closest friend Saint John Chrysostom was appointed Patriarch of Constantinople in 398, he advised her to assist the poor rather than the undeserving and became her spiritual guide.
Saint Olympias built an orphanage and a hospital. In addition, she established a refuge for monks who had been expelled from Nitria.
In 404, Saint John Chrysostom was removed from the patriarchal office, and Arsacius, who was completely unworthy of the position, was appointed Patriarch. Saint Olympias, the most devoted disciple of Saint John Chrysostom, refused to recognize Arsacius. She also continued to provide assistance to Saint John Chrysostom. Enraged by this, the official Optatus imposed a fine on the saint. Atticus, the successor of Arsacius, dissolved her convent and put an end to her charitable works.
The final years of the exiled Saint Olympias were marked by illness and suffering. Nevertheless, Saint John Chrysostom, from the place where he lived in hiding, continued to send her guidance and words of consolation through letters. Less than a year after the death of John Chrysostom, on July 24, Saint Olympias also passed away in Nicomedia, the place of her exile.
